This 150 hour professional training is a Yoga Australia registered post-graduate course and is the first module of our Yoga Alliance RYT500 Level 2 accredited Yoga Therapy Teacher Training. You'll gain a thorough grounding in the principles of yoga therapy and start practicing your new skills straight away as you apply your learning to real-life case studies. You can choose to take this 150hr post-graduate training as a stand alone course, or upgrade to full RYT500/Yoga Alliance Level 2 status by continuing to the second module in August 2015.

Curriculum:

Introduction to Yoga Therapy
Dive right into a personal enquiry into the nature of yoga therapy, the attributes of a therapeutic yoga teacher and the traditional framework for healing through yoga.

Anatomy and Physiology
Deepen your understanding of the human body as we examine the body's systems through the yoga lens. You'll enjoy hands-on exercises that will sharpen your observation skills as you explore the bones, connective tissue, muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and biological systems.

Applied yoga therapy
Using the tools and techniques of yoga to help students manage common health conditions including back pain, soft tissue injuries, asthma, anxiety, cancer and more.

Yoga psychology
The body-mind connection is central to the practice of therapeutic yoga. Discover the the qualities of the mind according to Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, learn about the yogic model of psychological wellbeing and find out how to work with the body-mind connection to help your students heal.

Subtle anatomy
Yoga therapy works with both the physical and the subtle yogic body. Build on your knowledge of the panca kosha (5 sheaths) and the panca vayus (5 pranas), nadis and cakras and learn how to use these models in a healing context.

Ayurveda fundamentals
The principles of Ayurveda are an important component of yoga therapy. This fascinating exploration of Ayurveda will teach you how to apply the elemental Ayurvedic framework for healing as a therapeutic yoga teacher.

Nutrition and health
Discover the latest science of holistic nutrition, learn how to eat for optimum health and explore how eating habits are intricately bound up in our physical and emotional health.

Therapeutic techniques
Working with asana in a therapeutic context goes far beyond simply adapting poses according to student's abilities. You'll be exploring the importance of working with the breath in asana, the principles of sthira/sukha, the benefits and techniques of relaxation and restorative practices, subtle touch and adjustment, effective propping techniques, therapeutic sequencing and the appropriate modification of asana.

Pranayama and meditation
Expand your understanding of pranayama and meditation as we examine the theories and practices in the context of the 8 Limbs of yoga. You will learn how to assess the needs of individual students, then discover how to prepare for and teach appropriate pranayama and meditation techniques that meet their specific requirements. You'll be learning a number of pranayama and meditation techniques, including the use of chanting and mantra.

The professional practitioner
Discover the theories and best practices of a professional yoga teacher. This subject explores counselling and communication skills, the therapeutic relationship, working within your professional capabilities and ethical business management.

Practicum: teaching & assisting
You'll undertake 15hrs hours practicum, half of which will be a placement in a community/therapeutic teaching environment.

Mentor & Yoga Therapy Sessions
In order to work with yoga therapy, you must have experienced therapeutic yoga with a trained teacher. This course requires you to attend 2 x private mentoring sessions with senior faculty member ($100 payment directly to mentoring teacher, price not included in course fee).

Joan Miller

Joan Miller is a senior and talented teacher with over 30 years of experience in yoga teaching and teacher training. Joan takes yoga back to its authentic roots, using the traditional practices of Hatha Yoga to help her students develop spiritual and physical awareness. Certified by over five nationally and internationally recognised bodies, member of Australia’s peak body for Yoga, Yoga Australia and Accredited Journey Therapist, Joan is a highly qualified, compassionate and inspiring Yoga Teacher, Yoga Therapist and Reiki Master.

Nikola Ellis

Nikola Ellis BA (hons) Dip. Health (Yoga), Dip. Shiatsu, IAYT, AAYT, E-RYT, Level 3 (Yoga Australia)

Founder and Principal Teacher at Adore Yoga, Nikola Ellis has been immersed in yoga for over 20 years. A certified Level 3 teacher (Yoga Australia) and an ERYT500 teacher (Yoga Alliance) and member of the AAYT (Australian Association of Yoga Therapists) and the IAYT (International Association of Yoga Therapists), she has studied yoga, meditation and yoga therapy with leading international teachers.

For the past decade, Nikola has specialised in yoga therapy and teacher training, using her wealth of experience to bring the philosophy and practice of yoga vividly to life. She is actively engaged with several non-profits and is the founder of the Pink Yoga project which is dedicated to making yoga freely available to women with cancer. Nikola is currently undertaking a Masters degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Rosemary Manners

Pharmacist, Naturopath, Nutritionalist,Herbalist, Aromatherapist, Iridologist,Master Practitioner of NeuroLinguistic Programming, Time Line Therapy®, Hypnosis & Pharmacy Owner

Rosemary has been passionate about health since graduating from Sydney University with a Bachelor of Pharmacy 25 years ago. Ten years ago she completed a Diploma of Naturopathy from Nature Care College and since then she has been studying the mind and the decisions we make in relationship to health. This study has included Neurolinguistic programming, Time Line Therapy and Hypnosis. Rosemary is also a trainer in NLP and Time Line Therapy.

Sevadevi

Sevadevi is a Senior Yoga and Meditation Teacher with 18 years full time teaching experience. She founded Annandale Yoga in 2012 where she currently teaches and has taught Yoga and Meditation workshops in both Europe and India.
In 2005 she presented “Yoga for Diabetes” at the “Yoga, the Science of Infinite Possibilities” Conference and Mantra in Action workshop at the 2007 AYA Conference. In 2009 she was invited to speak at the World Parliament of Religions in Melbourne.
She is a founding member of Ayurveda Yoga Australia an organization promoting Ayurveda and yoga that conducted 2 major International conferences in 2006 and 2009 in Sydney. She completed extensive Teacher Training in 1996 with Yoga in Daily Life and taught philosophy modules as part of their teacher training programme. Further studies include Exercise Science with Satyananada Yoga. Sevadevi is a gentle, intuitive teacher with a passion for the meditative practices of Yin Yoga and Kirtan.

Brook McCarthy

Brook McCarthy is creator of Yoga Reach, an online marketing consultancy and training organisation specifically for wellbeing professionals. She's been teaching yoga and meditation intermittently for 17 years since discovering these at university where she was studying Comparative Religions. Through business coaching, marketing consulting and training, Brook enables yoga and wellbeing professionals to be bold in business by embracing their natural advantages – creativity, self-expression, and compassion. Brook has a background in public relations and communications.
