—————————-Day 05-09 (Rishikesh – Haridwar – Uttarkashi)——————–
Rishikesh will serve as our base camp for the middle portion of the trip. From this serene perch on the Ganges, many wonderful excursions and adventures, both planned and spontaneous, await town’s setting is spectacular. It is situated on the banks of the holy Ganga(Ganges) where the Himalayan foothills emerge onto the plain. The town itself straddles both banks of the Ganges and is connected by two impressive rope suspension bridges which are always busy with pilgrims, devotees, sadhus and cows. Ashrams dot the forest covered hillside and sadhus (holy men) live in caves on the outskirts, but the majority of visitors are Indian pilgrims on the yatra (pilgrimage) trail up to the source of the Ganges.
Many come to the ashrams for study and spiritual practices. In the evening, everyone joins in the nightly ritual of Ganga Aarati celebrated by chanting and waving of lamps accompanied by the covering of flower garlands to Mother Ganga. You’ll have the opportunity to enjoy the presence and wisdom of some of the many yogis who live and visit this spiritually fertile area and share the company of the international students they attract.
Uttarkashi: From Rishikesh, we’ll have the opportunity to take a day trip to Uttarkashi, which is a holy site along the yatra path to the source of the Ganges. Along the way you’ll step back in time and tread the path of timeless pilgrims before you and take your place among them
Haridwar means “abode of Vishnu” the Preserver. One of the great sacred cities of India, Haridwar remains a major pilgrimage site along the Ganga Yatra.
Thousands visit the shores of the Ganges daily to take a holy dip in her healing waters. The old-world bazaars will dazzle the eye and cover an adventure of the senses you won’t want to miss.
