Full Description

Careful, sensitive and respectfully applied hands-on adjustments and assists are skills that can fundamentally enhance your teaching and your relationship with your students. Given with appropriate attention that guides the student to find their own alignment through their body’s own intelligence, hands-on assists can be transformational experiences for your students, awakening their connection to their inner wisdom – the ‘inner teacher’.

However, it takes practice and experience to learn to see when hands-on intervention would be of benefit or necessary and how offer adjustment by touch so that the result is not the opposite: harm to the integrity of the human form and, at worst, injuries. When you know what to look for, with practice you can develop the confidence to offer manual assistance appropriately. This will improve your teaching in group class environment and one-to-one interaction.

Key considerations in hands-on support and guidance are the direction and force of manual touch offered in relation to gravity and anatomy. We consider it fundamentally important that any hands-on guidance is in alignment with the student’s own biomechanics rather than being subjected to an idea of a pose per se. Given this way, hands-on intervention brings the student in contact with their body’s own intelligence, supporting a deeper embodied experience, enhancing awareness and encouraging ease and depth of breath.

On this 20-hour immersion, we will lay the foundational principles and reasoning for manual touch that are based on biomechanics, gravity and postural awareness. These principles will be our common ground when we cover safe and relevant hands-on adjustments and assists for various asana such as twists (standing or seated), backbends (prone or supine) and forward bends (standing or seated). Where relevant, we will also review the use of a wide range of props to support hands-on assists.
