OM at Cashew Hill:
OM opened its doors in 2008 as the original functioning yoga studio and health center in Puerto Viejo. Since then OM has relocated to Cashew Hill and grown into an all-inclusive retreat and training center, hosting students and facilitators from around the world. Enjoy the variety our ocean view spa has to offer from bodywork such as, Ayurvedic, Deep Tissue, Swedish, and Thai massage, as well as lightwork including Clarity Breathwork, Cranio Sacral, and Reiki treatments.

Avani Gilbert, Founder/Director:
Avani Gilbert is the Director of OM at Cashew Hill and the Founder and Lead Trainer of Caribe Yoga Academy. With over 16-years of yoga experience, Avani is an E-RYT 500, Licensed Massage Therapist, Reiki Master Teacher, and Clarity Breathwork Practitioner. Through her Karuna Flow, Avani emphasizes the importance of Karmic consciousness, CommUNITY, Kula, and Seva. Her flows are a mix of creativity and fun with a focus on alignment and compassion. Her asana offerings include, but are not limited to, Vinyasa, Yin, and Restorative.

Avani began her exploration of yoga as a teenager to counter participation in high school competitive sports. From there she developed a lifelong love of the practice and continues her journey and endless study along the yogic path. She has participated in yoga teacher trainings throughout the United States and Costa Rica while accumulating over 3,500 hours of teaching experience through classes, workshops, and trainings.

Puerto Viejo:
The Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica offers a wild, natural setting for the sacred exploration of the wild, natural practice of yoga. OM at Cashew HIll is conveniently located less than five minutes from the town of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, yet tucked away in a quiet jungle corner to support deep and sacred study. Puerto Viejo offers a diverse cultural experience with dozens of nationalities represented within the community. During your days off explore 14 kilometers of gorgeous and pristine Caribbean beaches, snorkel the reef of Punta Uva, hike the waterfalls BriBri, horseback ride, surf the waves of Playa Cocles, or spot the local wildlife at Cahuita National Park. Costa Rica is a nature lovers dream and Puerto Viejo offers the best of where the jungle meets the sea! We're here to help you find the perfect adventure when you're not immersed in your yogic studies.

HOW TO GET THERE:
Puerto Viejo is a 4 ½ - 5 hour bus or shuttle ride from the Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO). From Puerto Viejo town center, a taxi can bring you and your luggage three blocks back and up the jungle hill to our magical jungle home. We are happy to help you organize transportation to and from your training, just let us know.

WHAT’S INCLUDED:
Shared Accommodation in a gorgeous near-to-nature setting, three vegetarian farm-to-table meals daily, a waterfall hike, expert instruction, an International experience staff, workbook & manual, Yoga Alliance Certificate and support from assistants.

WHAT’S NOT INCLUDED:
Transportation to and from Airport, Flights, required reading books.

TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:
Jungle Life is not for everyone! We want a near-to-nature experience in order to sink into an appreciation of earth's natural cycles. We live in peace with all creatures the less-desired ones! If this doesn't seem like your cup of tea, a luxury resort may be more your style. We are a jungle lodge, permaculture project and located in a surf town.

Also, when the rain comes down in the rainforest (it has a tendency to do that!) it comes down HARD! Temperatures can be much cooler than during the daytime. Bring warmer layers for any rainy nights.

BEFORE THE TRAINING:
Do I need to develop my yoga practice prior to the start of the training? How proficient in yoga must I be to complete the program?
Yes, you need to have a pretty solid personal practice prior to starting the yoga teacher training. You should have a minimum of 1 to 1.5 years of an established Hatha Yoga practice and an interest in deepening your study of Hatha Yoga. A familiarity with the basic sets of postures will be helpful in your ongoing study. It would be challenging to be learning the basics of yoga at the same time as you are learning to teach it. The contact hours will be physically and mentally demanding.
Do I need to complete any homework prior to the start of the training?
Please see the recommended reading list. Although these sources are not required homework they will be reference during the course of the training. If you are familiar with them it will be helpful to your learning path and development as a yoga teacher.
What is the price of the course? What are my payment options?
Please see our pricing page with payment options.
When is the full payment for the training due?
Please see our pricing page with payment options.
Does the price include meals?
Non-immersion courses do not include meals or accommodation in the pricing. Immersion courses include two meals daily and accommodation.
Does CYA include accommodation? Will you help find me accommodation?
Caribe Yoga Academy does not provide accommodation for its non-immersion programs. All immersion programs include housing at Cashew Hill Jungle Lodges.
Are books and materials included in the price of the training?
Required reading books are not included nor study materials. All yoga teacher training manual materials and handouts are included.
Do I need to purchase all of the books on the reading list of the program?
Normally a mailing list with all students will be sent out so that students can collaborate on ride sharing and study resources. It will be easiest and most convenient for your studies if you have your own copies of the required reading materials. A kindle or nook works fine as well.
What style of yoga is taught during the training?
At the Caribe Yoga Academy you will learn an alignment-based, Flow style of Hatha Yoga.
Is the training very asana intensive?
Please plan to practice 2 to 4 hours of asana daily. The remainder of the hours will be made up of study, workshop, collaborative projects and practice teaching.
How is the CYA qualified to run this sort of program?
To be a Registered Yoga School (RYS) the Program Director must be registered through the Yoga Alliance as an E-RYT 200. You must apply as a school and meet all of the criteria required by Yoga Alliance and all of the standards of your proposed syllabus. Avani Gilbert is an E-RYT 500 who has also been assisting and guest teaching on 200 and 500 level yoga teacher trainings with the Pavones Yoga Center. She is the program director and developer at the Caribe Yoga Academy.
When will I find out if I have been accepted to the program?
After sending in your initial registration request and form a representative from the Caribe Yoga Academy will be in contact with you within 3 to 5 business days with your acceptance or details about any further information needed. As long as you meet all requirements and agree to the terms and conditions, in most cases you will receive acceptance.
How many students are enrolled in a CYA program at a time?
The non-immersion program has a limited enrollment of 10 students. Immersion programs have a limited enrollment of 24 students.
What is the difference between your program options?
Non-immersion means that the program is held over the course of 3 to 5 months in weekend long modules. This is to enable people to take a Yoga Teacher Training while still holding down a full-time job. This route is generally more financially accessible as it does not include housing and meals.
What is the typical age range of yoga students for YTTs?
Most students at YTTs will fit somewhere in the 20 to 65 years old age range, however as long as a candidate meets the requirements, agrees to the terms and conditions and shows a sincere desire to deepen their practice and study of yoga, practically any age could be present!
Do you offer scholarship or work-exchange programs?
CYA offers a limited number of work-exchange programs each year to prospective students with exceptional circumstances. Spaces in work-exchange are not guaranteed to be an option for every session and work may range from marketing, YTT assisting or online work. To express interest and apply for a position please email us directly.
I am interested in enrolling to deepen my own practice but don’t intend to teach; is that okay?
Taking a yoga teacher training is a great way to immerse yourself in a very deep study of the yoga practice. If you end up teaching in the future, that’s great! If you don’t end up teaching you will carry many new concepts, inquiries and explorations into your personal practice based on such a deep and focused study. It’s a win-win!
What do I need to bring to the training?
Writing utensils, notebook and a three ring binder, changes of yoga clothes and your personal yoga mat if you wish. Also good to bring a water bottle, bathing suit, towel, sarong and your reading books / study materials. Sunblock and bug repellent usually come in handy, as well!
DURING THE TRAINING:
What is the refund policy if I am unable to attend or finish the training?
Please see our Terms and Conditions.
Do I need to follow any ethical guidelines?
Students of the Caribe Yoga Academy will be expected to follow set ethical guidelines which can be seen on the Terms and Conditions.
What happens if I miss some of the hours/weekends?
Please see the attendance clause in the Terms and Conditions.
How much time should I plan to spend on homework?
There will be some non-contact hours required, but should not accumulate to more than 10 hours/month in the non-immersion program and no more than 2 hours/daily in the immersion program.
How much time should I plan to spend in Asana practice during the training?
There will be a minimum of 2 hours of Asana practice daily during the yoga teacher training and a maximum of 5 hours of Asana daily. The remaining hours will be made up of workshop, group work, practice teaching and study.
Will I have the opportunity to actually practice teaching classes?
Yes! In fact, it is a requirement of the Yoga Alliance that you should gain hours with actual live teaching experience. We will do our absolute best to prepare you to be a competent and confident yoga teacher before you head off into the world with your certificate!
AFTER THE TRAINING:
What happens after I graduate? Is there an ongoing relationship / support with the Caribe Yoga Academy?
The Caribe Yoga Academy seeks to maintain an on-going support system and connection with all graduates and students. Be sure to get added to any Facebook groups, blogs and mailing lists. Also check in about future opportunities to assist or guest teach. We look forward to hearing about and being involved in our student’s present and future yogic path.
What is the Yoga Alliance?
Yoga Alliance was formed in 1999 as a way to create a nationally recognized standard in the field of yoga. These standards are for individual teachers as well as for teacher training programs. Many studios worldwide require affiliation with the Yoga Alliance before permitting employment, but as of this date it is not a legal requirement to be registered with YA.
Will I be qualified to teach yoga once I have completed the training?
Yes. With successful completion of all program requirements and the final exam you will receive a Yoga Alliance recognized 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training Certificate which qualifies you, according to the Yoga Alliance standards, to lead group Asana classes. However, feeling in your heart that you are ready to teach is the most important factor! Many students continue to take training courses over the span of a long and healthy yogic path.
Will I be registered with Yoga Alliance once I finish this training?
No. Registering with the Yoga Alliance is a separate process and may be done directly through their website. You will be qualified to register as a 200 RYT upon successful graduation from Caribe Yoga Academy. We are a registered yoga school through YA which means upon graduation if you choose to register you may. It is not required, but it is highly recommended.
If I lose my CYA Yoga Alliance certificate can I get another one?
You may contact the Caribe Yoga Alliance for a new official copy of your Yoga Alliance approved certificate. The certificate will be mailed once we receive a $30 USD certificate replacement fee.
