Full Description

This beginners course provides an ideal way (but not the only way) to learn Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. The practice builds up slowly week by week giving you a strong and safe foundation from which to develop a practice of your own. Modifications and adjustments will be given, so that the postures are accessible to everyone. During the course you can expect to learn the fundamentals of the Ashtanga Vinyasa practice including breath, bandhas and the suyra namaskars (sun salutations), standing poses and a simple finishing sequence with the emphasis on committing these to memory, so that you feel confident to practice in a Led Class, Mysore Style setting or independent of a teacher. You will be encouraged to do a little practice at home between our sessions together, so that you receive the most from the teachings, as it is only through direct experience relating to ourselves that we truly learn.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is the original dynamic form of yoga passed down to us by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, India. The three key elements: synchronising of the breath with movement (vinyasa), the sequence of postures (asanas), and the gazing points (dristhi), bring about a strong and flexible body and mind. The heat created internally by this very physical practice allows for toxins to flow out of the body, cleaning the blood and all internal organs. This detoxification brings a healthy body and an equanimous mind.

The course will run at The Beacon, up on the West Hill, Hastings. The studio there is airy, spacious and light with views of the garden all around. You will need to purchase a yoga mat of your own for the course, as mats are not provided at this studio. You can purchase a good quality, economic mat from I would recommend the ‘Classic Yoga Mat’

Once you’ve completed the course you may wish to repeat the course at The Beacon,
or join the Mysore Self Practice or weekly led classes, held at The Wellington Centre.
