This training will be from 11:00 to 5:00, with a lunch break from 1:00-2:00.
Yoga is a boon for those who are aging: it increases flexibility, lung capacity, and muscle strength, and it provides the means to handle age-related stressors. A traditional mat-based class can be difficult for those over 60. Seniors who are unable to get onto the floor can get the benefits of yoga from a chair-based class.
In the first half of this workshop, Julia will focus on teaching yoga to active seniors who may be limited due to arthritis and age-related creakiness. Learn asana adaptations using the chair to adapt to limited flexibility, including a standing sun salutation. You will also learn the joint-freeing series and stress reduction techniques to alleviate emotional and physical constraints of aging.
The second half of the workshop will prepare you for teaching elders in their 80s and 90s. Learn seated movements and resistance exercises for strength as well as standing poses for balance. Julia will provide guidance for enhancing range of motion and sharpening students’ focus. You will learn to provide a fully satisfying chair savasana, as well as guided visualizations for pain.
There will be an opportunity within the workshop to practice teaching a short segment of chair yoga. Julia will provide an extensive handout with resources for further learning.
