Find Freedom in your spine

In this workshop you will learn yoga techniques to find spinal extension, relieve the neck, shoulders , upper and lower back. I will teach you how to subtly activate your core to provide a point of stability and integrity for the spine. This allows us to be strong in our centres and gives freedom to the rest of the body. This centering and lengthening facilities the ability to find inner strength and can translate into the rest of our lives allowing for a strong and grounded base.

Full Description

When we spend much of our time sitting, driving, looking at mobile phones or reading, our natural tendency is to come into a slumped position with the hands and shoulders forwards. This means we protract or stick our head forwards which cramps the small joints at the back of the necks and can lead to neck pain, headaches or nerve impingements . The shoulders also tend to round forwards and the pectoralis muscle get tight and shorten, which in itself cause nerve impingement problems and exacerbate neck and back pain. The strong trapezius muscles also tend to go into over drive and pull the shoulders up. This in turn means we curve our thoracic spine and tend to hang off the ligaments in the top of our spine. This leads sore upper backs and quite often we develop a degree of thoracic stiffness. In this position we can also put pressure on the discs in the small of the back as we sit with a curved or slumped lower back , with poor “core ” activation.
What will you learn?
In this workshop you will learn yoga techniques to find spinal extension, relieve the neck, shoulders , upper and lower back. I will teach you how to subtly activate your core to provide a point of stability and integrity for the spine. This allows us to be strong in our centres and gives freedom to the rest of the body. This centering and lengthening facilities the ability to find inner strength and can translate into the rest of our lives allowing for a strong and grounded base. Learn how to relax the overactive and dominant muscles such as the trapezius and pectorals muscles and find stability with activating the smaller stabilising muscles around the shoulder complex and spine.

Discover which areas of your spine need attention and how to find freedom in your movement. We will work from the base up, creating length through the whole spine, opening the hips, sacrum, lower back, thoracic spine, neck and shoulders.
What will we be doing?
The workshop will start with body awareness , visiting individual points of tension of discomfort. We will warm up each area of the spine so you can develop your own mindful body awareness techniques. We then move into a heating yoga flow to work through our spine, finding length, stability and freedom.

The workshop will finish with breath awareness techniques and restorative postures to find ease in your spine and allow the heavy overactive muscles to switch off, which will again, will help you find length and freedom in your spine.

There will be space to ask questions and to move deeper into your practice.

The workshop is part of my monthly series and will be at the beautiful Happy Ohm Studio, Capitol House , 3-4 Heigham Street, Norwich.
