Full Description

One next wave of new yogis will be people over 55. This workshop will prepare you to incorporate these students into your current classes or to create specialty classes just for them. Marcia Miller, Mary Sinclair and Angela LaMonte have decades of experience in working with this population, who have a wide variety of needs. They have taught seniors in nursing homes, senior living facilities and centers for senior health, in public yoga classes and private therapeutic sessions. Their experience is real-world and time-tested, because seniors aren’t shy about telling them what works and why!

Many older adults begin yoga to improve their flexibility and balance. Some just want better posture as the proverbial "bump on their back" becomes a real concern. Many are in chronic pain, feel stressed and have stress-related issues. Some have sleep disorders. They are looking for relief.

In this workshop you will learn important principles for working with yoga poses done while sitting in chairs or supine on the floor or in a bed and key elements of standing poses for seniors. You will learn many hands-on techniques that are guided toward relaxing tension and helping your students feel a sense of connection with gravity, themselves and the world around them. You will learn pranayama practices that help them become aware of their breath and tone the respiratory muscles, bringing relaxation and vitality to them as they age. You will learn simple practices that build strength safely. Everything taught in this workshop will be directly related to the concerns of older students, including balance, the agility needed to navigate stairs and perform daily tasks like laundry and the real movements of daily living. Yoga practiced in this way will leave your older students feeling more alive and confident in their abilities.
