Iyengar-inspired yoga retreat in the magical Italian Alps with Filippo Fabbri

A week of gently challenging Iyengar yoga with Filippo Fabbri. We will practice yoga for six days and have a day off midweek with opportunities for extended mountain walks, swimming and an optional excursion to Palazzo Vertemate, a Renaissance palace with frescoed walls and ceilings. An Ayurvedic vegetarian brunch of Italian and Asian dishes will be prepared after morning practice. If you are keen, we may hold salsa and samba dance classes! After all that work, you can relax with a Thai massage.

Full Description

Arriving on Saturday afternoon we will start with a welcome and buffet dinner in the evening. Practice days will run with yoga class twice a day (except Wednesday, where you have the option of watercolour painting class) until the following Saturday morning. Classes will include asana, pranayama and meditation. Breathe pure mountain air, drink clean spring water and experience the healing powers of nature! Fillippo Fabbri is a highly experienced teacher with many years of training and study in the Himalayas. He is well known and much loved as the resident Iyengar-inspired teacher at Varkala in Kerala where he has an international following.

We offer a range of accommodation options, from camping to staying in our rustic house to cosy bed and breakfast with local friends or more luxurious hotel accommodation in Chiavenna – transfers to the retreat will be arranged every morning. Classes are taught in English.

Chiavenna is a magical Renaissance town dating back to Roman times. It underwent intensive construction from the late 15th century. Its cobbled streets hold a vast array of original features such as frescoed walls and carved wooden doors, not to mention at least three fantastic gelaterias (ice cream parlours) and many family-run restaurants and cafés. There are also many good shops selling the kind of high-end clothing you would expect from a town so close to Milan. We are situated a short drive from the scenic lake Como and nearby there is a lovely open boggia (pool beneath a waterfall) to swim in. Late August temperatures in Chiavenna average 26 to 27 degrees Celsius!

Going vegetarian for a week offers your digestive system the opportunity to cleanse itself. Italian cooking lends itself naturally to vegetarianism being based on fresh vegetables and grains. A vegetarian buffet will be prepared each day to Ayurvedic principles using organic herbs from our garden, and each dish will be labelled according to the dosha it is best suited for. By tailoring your dietary choices to your dosha the food will aid to strengthen and heal your system. Evenings are free to explore and enjoy the local culinary magic, and we hope that with enhanced information about your dosha you will be able to make choices that support your practice. Buon appetito!
