If you love music or singing, this could be for you. If you believe you can’t sing, that’s fine, come anyway! We offer a very accepting environment where you have the opportunity to participate and express yourself through song. This can be an incredibly liberating experience without having to perform in front of others. In Kirtan, we sing as group, so it is easy to participate at the level at which you are comfortable. Kirtan is not about how well you sing… or more to the point, how well you think you sing. It's more about opening the heart and being free.
So what is Kirtan? Pronounced "kear (as in hear) – tarn (as in barn)", it translates as 'to repeat' or 'the continuous repetition of a mantra' (other meanings relate to singing & praising), and through this sound vibrations are utilised to expand the consciousness. Mantra means 'the force which liberates the mind' or 'to transform, to liberate, to cross over'. Melodious mantra are sung and accompanied by live music, with music alone being a powerful method of healing oneself and bringing forth higher states of consciousness. It's a great (not to mention easy) way to let go.
There is a belief that everything in the universe is in a state of movement or vibration, with the different layers of body and mind being nothing but the manifestation of innumerable sound vibrations in a multitude of combinations. One object of Kirtan is the discovery, purification and control of our vibratory level of existence to the most subtle degree. The intellectual understanding of a mantra is not necessary for it to have a powerful effect internally and externally. The mantras have a specific essence, that when chanted bring that vibration into your being. The chanting often opens one up into a loving space as negative emotions fall away.
Whether Kirtan is a devotional / divine practice for you, a method of meditation, or a way to have fun and relax, the mantras and music awaken positive states of awareness and qualities within participants. The various musical notes and sounds of the mantra correspond with their own nadis (our energetic pathways) in connection with the chakras (our energetic centres). Thus the purification and awakening of our etheric (energy) being is enhanced.
Prolonged practice can give rise to blissful and / or deeply peaceful states. Kirtan is one of the methods by which Bhakti or transcendental love is brought forth, which can allow one to easily go beyond the rational mind and move into the realm of spirit.
Adding the power of mantra and music with the emotional aspect of our being gives rise to a great force. This force is infinite and can truly transform your life… and even quiet the busiest of minds.
