It is a well-known fact these days that yoga and meditation are considered powerful practices to heal from stress, and that through a regular yoga practice you can improve both your mental and physical health.

Specific yogic teachings and practices help us move towards optimum health and wellbeing, and for me this means that whoever you are, where ever you are, you can make use of yoga and meditation to manage your health and wellbeing.

Before we can make the necessary changes towards wellness we need to understand what is going on in the body and mind when we are under stress, because often this response is so habitual, and therefore often unconscious, we don’t recognise it as stress!

Yes, it is true, most people don’t know they are permanently stressed, and that state becomes their “regular” stance. They feel fatigued, unwell, drained, experience mood swings, poor concentration, poor digestion/assimilation, a sense of no time and that there is generally not enough, always on the edge of overwhelm, experiencing unwanted physical and mental symptoms… all these often point to an adapted stress response.
And of course it is not because it is common that it is ok – in fact it is absolutely unnecessary and with diligence and commitment these symptoms can be alleviated.

We need to know that we can take control over the habitual behaviors and responses that cultivate the unwanted mental states which promote imbalances, bearing in mind that these are mostly ancient and so deeply engrained they can pass as “part of our “personality”.

Of course yoga isn’t just for the body, it is essentially for the mind because when you improve your mental climate you restore the body’s natural predisposition for balance and wellness, and that leads to a happy and healthy body and mind!
