Low back pain is a universal human experience -- almost everyone has it at some point. It is the lower back that supports the whole upper body., carrying its weight.
The lower back, which starts below the ribcage, is called the lumbar region. Pain here can be intense and is one of the top causes of missed work.
Symptoms range from a dull ache to a stabbing or shooting sensation. The pain may make it hard to move or stand up straight. Acute back pain comes on suddenly, often after an injury from sports or heavy lifting. Pain that lasts more than three months is considered chronic.
Possible causes of pain in the lumbar region:
-Improper posture during the prolonged hours of sitting or standing
-Inactive lifestyle or excessive workout
-Being overweight or simply carrying the heavy back on a shoulder daily
-A bulging or ruptured or herniated disc that presses on the nerve roots ( the sciatic nerve). It is caused by natural wear & tear of a disc or an injuiry
- A muscle strain or overextension from a hard workout or a job that involves lifting heavy weights, pulling, twisting
