Yoga for Arthritis was developed at a leading research university by an interdisciplinary team of medical and healing professionals. Combining ancient Yoga practices with modern medical knowledge, this program offers modifications for addressing the unique abilities and limitations of persons with arthritis and related conditions. In a seven-year randomized clinical trial, program participation was associated with improved arthritis symptoms, disease biomarkers, physical fitness, psychological functioning, and quality of life.
This program is endorsed by the Arthritis Foundation and is the basis for its Arthritis-Friendly Yoga DVD, which was released in 2012. It is also a member specialty program with the International Association of Yoga Therapists.
Completion also qualifies a participant for Yoga Alliance and International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) credit hours. This course is a prerequisite for the Yoga for Arthritis Certification Course (24 hours), which results in the credential of Certified Yoga for Arthritis Teacher.
As a result of taking this program, the program participants will be able to:
Understand the basic differences between autoimmune and mechanical joint disease
Offer modifications for persons with arthritis attending their Yoga classes
Teach Yoga for Arthritis classes in their communities
Work individually with arthritic clients of all ability levels
