Breathing Basics and Practices/Pranayama
Medical science has confirmed the relationship between wellness and the way an individual breathes. Proper breathing techniques affect the skeletal and respiratory systems as well as ones’ state of mind. Shallow breathing is associated with depression, cardiac issues, back problems and other health related issues. Learning to breathe properly, lengthening the breath and using the breath with movement can change the course and/or help to prevent many of these problems. Proper breathing will also be used as preparation for the second half of the class, Meditation/Mindfulness Training.
Meditation is a state of mind. One learns to meditate by practicing to concentrate. There are many techniques used to train the mind to be quiet so that a meditative state can be achieved. In this class you will be guided through each practice using some of the techniques used in the iRest (Integrative Restoration) program developed by Richard Miller. This practice may be done sitting in a chair, the floor or reclining. It will be aimed at providing a state of deep relaxation by calming the mind and nervous system and helping to reduce pain.
