Restorative Yoga is a special style of practice where the body is supported with ‘props’. These are often yoga bolsters, cushions and blankets however can be anything really.
The principle is to support the body so the muscles don’t need to switch on as readily. This activates the relaxation response and over time we become more familiar with it. This type of practice gives a message to the brain that it is ok to produce the hormones that allow us to relax as we are for the time being, fully supported and don’t have to do the work, put in the effort.
The poses are held for 5 minutes or so and mostly are floor based. There is some very gentle movement included in these classes at times.
As the poses are floor based it is a good practice also for recovery from illness/injury and for those who can best manage slower movement that doesn’t bear weight. It is a practice to build energy and resilience through is a practice that is appropriate for everyone and anyone. There is time to work with variations and the space in the class to be attended to individually.
