In examining the necessary elements for a happy and successful life, two of the most important to develop are our attentional balance and emotional balance. Due to restlessness, dullness and continuous inner rumination, we are frequently unable to maintain the focus of our attention, thus preventing us from achieving optimal performance in our lives. Clearly, if we were to strengthen our faculty of attention, our lives would improve dramatically.
During this retreat, Andrea Capellari will lead participants on an exploration of the theory and practice behind a range of techniques for developing attention balance. This exploration will include the practice of mindfulness of breathing, an effective approach to calming the body and the mind, as well as more advanced techniques such as mindfulness of the mind itself. The contemplative practice will consist of alternate sessions of sitting and walking meditation (cankama: steady walking). The two techniques complement each other helping to keep the meditation practice in balance so that mind settles at a point of stillness, calmness and clarity and becomes aware of both the inner world and the outer world in equal balance and that also brings the meditative experience into our activity.
The 7-day retreat will take place in the beautiful and serene environment of Thanyapura, a place specifically designed to facilitate the cultivation of attention and contemplation. Please note that the retreat will be silent, and we respectfully ask that the use of phones and email be avoided if possible. This decision will be left to discretion of the attendee.
During the meditative Samatha retreat, you will be mentored by our accomplished mind training instructor, Andrea Capellari, who in his 35 years of meditation experience served His Holiness the Dalai Lama and many other distinguished Tibetan scholars and contemplatives.
Upon the invitation of Prof. Alan B. Wallace, Andrea has been teaching mind training with emphasis on deep meditative stability to corporate leaders, professional athletes, and regular classes at Thanyapura since 2012.
