John Bultman is the principal instructor for the University of Virginia’s highly successful Ashtanga Yoga program in Charlottesville, VA, USA (2012 -). He was graciously granted Level II Authorization by his teacher Sharath Jois, Director of KPJAYI, Krishna Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute, Mysore, India, where he studies annually. John received a MS with an emphasis in Structural Geology and Tectonics from the University of Tennessee under the direction of distinguished professor Bob Hatcher. Before majoring in Geology he was a music major, skateboarder, and indie rock musician. He likes to work in painting, ceramics, and stained glass.

“I had been practicing Ashtanga for a year before I took my first workshop, which was with John Bultman. It was my first glimpse into the depths and wonder that can be found in an ashtanga practice. Since then I have studied with Sharath in Mysore and Richard Freeman in Boulder, and I still jump at the opportunity to study with John whenever I can. He combines a deep understanding of Ashtanga Yoga with a nurturing and humorous way of being that inspires me to continue to dive deeper into the practice. You really need to check it out. He’s awesome.” ~Scott Gardner, Award winning cinematographer

“John embodies the yoga practice with a depth and brilliance that are truly inspiring. His gravity as a teacher and practitioner guides a beautiful community of students, whose lives have been changed by the practice. We are so fortunate to work with him every day.” – David Kessel, writer and Russian Translator for the Kremlin

John has a rare dedication and understanding of the Ashtanga practice, which he teaches to students with precision, compassion, and humility. His teaching is rooted in his strong devotion to his teacher and the Ashtanga system, and he inspires a similar attitude in the students and peers he interacts with.” ~Wade Oakley, 4th year Yoga student

“John Bultman’s workshop was wonderful—pushing all of us to our limits. After class, what remained of the skimmed off energy, turned to bliss and gratitude. We all felt and meant every word of the closing chant!

One sweet manifestation of Parampara from the heart, is that John says “very good,” in the same tone as Sharath. It arises from the same soothing energy of loving kindness.

John is a wonderful teacher who understands, practices, and teaches all eight limbs of Ashtanga. In his asana classes, I have always been treated with the expectation that I can do anything. I have internalized that positivity in my practice and in life, with much gratitude to John and our lineage.” ~Marya Roland, Art Professor and Ashtanga enthusiast that has made several trips to Mysore.

“I want to thank John Bultman, my yoga teacher, for his warm, demanding, and humble guidance, especially in the intensive finishing phase of my dissertation. Through his devotion to the continuity of practice, he helped me every day and took me beyond what I thought was possible. I could not have written this dissertation without him.” – Beatrice Waegner, Phd graduate and former UVa student

“As John always says, Yoga is not about just getting physical exercise, Yoga is spiritual journey. As mush as I enjoy the practice of asanas, I really look forward to the last few minutes where John talks about various aspects of Yoga and its influence on ones life, meaning of Sanskrit chantings and interesting stories of his experiences.” -Vanamala Venkataswamy, Post doc and Yoga student

“Just this morning I commented to John, wasn’t David’s practice beautiful? Of course, I was referring to the most advanced student who glides though Level 2 as though levitating. John immediately responded, ‘They all have beautiful practices,’ as he casted his eye across a wide span of abilities. It’s the beauty John sees in our practices that make his students dedicated to their practice. Though he pushes students to do their best and is often heard, ‘Did you catch? Show me,’ his demonstrations and directions are clearly framed in support and laced with a bit of endearing humor. John has truly become our teacher presenting yoga as the gateway into contemplative lifestyles. As our teacher, John honors his teacher Sharath keeping the tradition yoga as established by Shri K. Pattabhi Jois.” ~ Linda Scandore, Retired teacher, Marathon athlete and all around cool lady

“John Bultman is a sensitive teacher with a discriminating intelligence. His commitment to the practice is inspiring. Johns work at our studio was powerful for both our students and teachers. His assists are precise caring and effective. I consider John an important influence on my path and hold him as one of my favorite teachers.” – Kim Manfredi, owner of Charm City Yoga Baltimore, Maryland.

“I am so grateful to have John as a teacher. He has a deep understanding of the practice that extends far beyond the asanas.” – Spyridon Simotas, French professor UVa

“I have appreciated John’s guidance as a teacher because he brings both theory and practice to the shala each day. With this background, we’re reminded that the potency of the practice of asanas derives from and cultivates much more than the physical practice.” ~ Aidyn Mills, Mom and Recent Phd Graduate
