Full Description

The Vernal (or Spring) Equinox, occurs this year on March 20th. On this day and at precisely 6:45pm EST, night and day are nearly the same length – 12 hours – all over the world.

Come celebrate this transformational evening with us at Alchemy and participate in the traditional practice of 108 sun salutations. Surya Namaskar, or the 'sun salutation', is a series of 12 yoga postures that energize the solar plexus and build stamina in both body and mind. The number 108 is auspicious in multiple cultures and traditions and for many reasons (see my post elsewhere on the Alchemy site for a description and examples). Yogis practice a tradition of 108 sun salutations at the changing of each season to help purge old habits and behaviors, cleanse and purify the body and mind, and honor the greater global and individual transition.

This class will be Mysore style, meaning the first 8 sun salutations will be instructor led. After, each student is free to practice the remaining 100 salutations as they see fit - at their own pace and breath.

Finishing 108 sun salutations is not a requirement, nor should it be an expectation. The meditative quality of repetitive movement and breath, aligned with the intention of clearing and energizing, is the most important aspect of this practice. It doesn't matter whether you do 108 or 18 sun salutations. Come, do what you can, and lend your energy to the room as we collectively honor and welcome the changing of the season!

Please bring a dish to pass for the potluck after class. We'll enjoy lots of good food after all those sun salutations to re-energize body, mind, and spirit!
