In this workshop Steve will explore the systematic sequence of postures that are said to be the original yoga practice brought to the West from India. This powerful practice, which focuses on linking movement (asanas) with breath (pranayama) while combining strength, flexibility, and stamina leads the practitioner to a meditative, focused and healing state.
Discussion will include the philosophy and history of Ashtanga as well as the method used to maintain a steady practice with ease. Practice will include focus moments and engagements. Whether you are new to the practice of yoga or an advanced practitioner, this workshop is designed to find your unique inner strength. Knowledge of Sun Salutations A & B will be helpful. Expect a challenging flow. All levels welcome.
Steve Dwelley has taught yoga for 20 years and was personally authorized to teach Ashtanga by Pattabhi Jois in 1998. Since then he has cultivated the Ashtanga community at the Ashtanga Yoga Shala in downtown Santa Barbara, where he and his wife, Michele, are co-directors. For the past 18 years he has opened his doors to the public at 5 am for the start of morning practice.
He is an advanced student of the practice and has been to Mysore India to study with the Jois family. In a long lineage of householder yogis, he is the father of twin sons age 12. He teaches from the heart.
