In Sanskrit bandha means to lock, to hold, or to tighten. There are 3 principle bandhas in the body and several others that are critical for deepening your connection in asana (Yoga) and meditation practice. When you learn to Use the locks, you will find a new sense of awareness in the external function yoga practice, such as floating in and out of asanas, holding poses for long periods of time, and cultivating more advanced inversions. The internal functions of your practice will also benefit, allowing for more concentration, smooth and steady breath, and a peaceful mind.
