The fifth of Patanjali’s eight limbs of yoga, is Pratyahara, or the ‘withdrawal of the senses’. This elusive limb can be so difficult to wrap our mind around when we first encounter it. How do we turn our gaze inward without turning our back on the outside world? How do we stay aware, yet unaffected? Simply put, how do we remain in the world, but not of it? We practice, that’s how. Pratyahara is participating in life, while keeping space, or a cushion between oneself, the world, and one’s response to it all. A great place to encourage an inward gaze and to see this limb in action in is on the yoga mat. We will work with mudra, meditation, breath exercises and postures to support this seemingly ambiguous limb.
