-- About Peter
Peter Levitt is an award winning poet and Zen teacher known for his gentleness, understanding, humour and warmth. He has been leading workshops that help people discover authentic creative expression in writing, painting and other arts for almost forty years. Authorised to teach within the Zen lineage of Shunryu Suzuki-roshi, (author of the classic Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind) Peter is the founder and guiding teacher of the Salt Spring Zen Circle, where he leads the community in weekly and monthly meditation practice, as well as bi-annual retreats. He also reads from his work, leads retreats and teaches throughout North America and Europe.
During the True Expression Retreat, Peter brings together his many years in the creative and meditation fields into what he calls “one of the most joyous, profound and expressive experiences I can imagine.”
Peter’s fourteen books include Fingerpainting on the Moon: Writing and Creativity as a Path to Freedom. His ten poetry books include the recently published One Hundred Butterflies and Within Within, which Governor General Award recipient, Robert Hilles, called “master works that….reveal the interconnected fabric of it all in ways that will leave you stunned.” In the same vein, legendary poet, Robert Creeley, wrote, “Peter Levitt’s poetry sounds the honour of our common dance.”In speaking about Peter’s teachings, Joanna Macy, the revered peace and environmental activist, Buddhist teacher, and author wrote:
"With this gentle and fearless guide, the way to creative self-expression becomes a path of liberation. The wisdom and practices he offers free me to walk out into the world as into my own heart—and discover that they are one."
