Yin Yoga is a slow-paced practice where mostly passive postures that mainly work the lower part of the body – the hips, pelvis, inner thighs, lower spine – are held for longer periods of time, typically around three to five minutes each.
The practice allows for a wide variance of postural shapes based on each person’s structural and bodily shape – a more functional, forgiving, and non-judgmental approach to asanas – while maximizing the force of gravity to access connective tissues between the muscles and deeper layers of fascia throughout the body.
The aim is to increase circulation in the joints, improve flexibility and help restore mobility and resilience in the joints.
In addition to its physical benefits, the practice of Yin Yoga helps us better understand our own unique range of movements and tolerance, creates an arena of mindfulness by shifting our dominance into our parasympathetic (“rest and digest”) nervous system, and opens a gateway to seated meditation practice.
