Yoga for the Special Child(R) The Sonia Sumar Method

Yoga for the Special Child(R) is a therapeutic program of yoga techniques designed by Sonia Sumar to enhance the natural development of children with special needs. The Basic One Program is a comprehensive training course on the theory & practice of yoga therapy for babies and children with learning and/or development disabilities from 0 -12 years old.

Yoga for the Special Child(R) is a registered yoga school with Yoga Alliance.

The Basic One Program is a 7-day course that begins at 9:00 on Saturday, March 14 and ends at 11:30 on Friday, March 20. The daily schedule includes classes from 9:00 to 4:30 with a one hour lunch break.

Basic One Program Outline

7-DAY TRAINING COURSE
 
Sonia Sumar and her team teach this comprehensive training course in the theory and practice of Yoga therapy for babies and children with learning and/or developmental disabilities from 0 to 12 years.
This course is open to Yoga therapists, instructors and students, health care practitioners, and families of special children.
 Our comprehensive workbook, Yoga for the Special Child®, is provided to participants.
It is important to understand the medical contraindications to certain asanas, so please do not try to copy our work without proper instruction.
 

Day 1 - Introduction and Orientation
9:00 am – Introduction and guide lines of the Program. 
9:30 am – Background on Sonia’s work with special children, beginning with the story of her daughter Roberta; Explanation of Yoga therapy; Using Yoga in the recovery of health.
12:00 pm – Meditation 
12:15 pm – Recuperating from physical problems and emotional trauma; Learning to heal from both acute and chronic diseases; Yoga as a restorative lifestyle for special children; 
1:00 pm - Lunch period and rest
2:00 pm – Recuperating from physical problems and emotional trauma; Learning to heal from both acute and chronic diseases; Yoga as a restorative lifestyle for special children, continued; 
3:00 pm - How Yoga helps to stimulate physical coordination, mental clarity and social development in special children. Case histories of children that Sonia has worked with, which demonstrates the beneficial effects of Yoga therapy.
4:30 – End of the day
1 hr – Homework; Read introduction and Chapter 1 of the program manual; breath observation. 
 

Day 2 - Sonia’s Teaching Methods
9:00 am – Asanas: training of Yoga poses. The parents role as guide and inspiration for the child; Working with parents; How to conduct interviews and telephone counseling; Setting up a regular meeting schedule with parents; 
10:30 am -  The importance of attitude;  How the parents and Yoga therapist can develop a positive and nurturing relationship with their student;  Creating the optimal home and family environment;  How to work with babies and children;  The use of touch, facial gestures, hand signals and voice to achieve bonding and integration with the student. 
12:00 pm – Meditation 
12:15 pm – The Four Stages of Development
The Preparatory Stage – Early Intervention (birth to six months) 
1:00 pm – Lunch and rest period
2:00 pm – The Four Stages of Development, continued.
The Inductive Stage – Learning to respond (six months to one year)
The Interactive Stage – Initiating Asanas (one to two years).
The Imitative Stage – Developing Independence (two to three years), continued.
3:00 pm – Asanas and Deep Relaxation 
4:30 pm - End of the day
1 hr – Homework – Read Chapter 2 of the program manual; breath observation. 

Day 3 - The Preparatory Stage – Early Intervention (birth to six months)
9:00 am - Theory and practice; a step-by-step demonstration and explanation including evaluating the infant and setting up a balanced Yoga routine; how to deal with specific cases – risks and contradictions. 
10:30 am - Group practice with therapy dolls and each other; Group discussion – Questions and Answers.
12:15 pm – Meditation 
12:45 pm – Chanting 
1:00 pm – Lunch and rest period
2:00 pm – Video presentation and/or hands-on practice session with therapy dolls and each other
2:30 pm – Demonstration with a child in the Preparatory Stage 
3:15 pm – Demonstration with a child in the Preparatory or Inductive Stage
4:00 pm - Group discussion of work with children – Questions and Answers. 
4:30 pm – End of the day
1 hr – Homework: Read Chapter 3 of the program manual; breath observation.

Day 4 - The Inductive Stage – Learning to respond
9:00 am – Theory and practice - a step-by-step demonstration and explanation. How to know when the child is ready to advance. 
10:30 am - Group practice with each other; Group discussion – Questions and Answers. 
12:15 pm – Meditation 
12:45 pm – Chanting
1:00 pm – Lunch and rest period
2:00 pm - Video presentation and/or hands-on individual instruction with children. 
2:30 pm – Demonstration with a child in the Inductive Stage
3:15 pm – Demonstration with a child in the Inductive or Interactive Stage
4:00 pm - Group discussion of work with children – Questions and Answers.
4:30 pm – End of the day
1 hr – Homework; Read Chapter 4 of the program manual; breath observation. 

Day 5 - The Interactive Stage – Initiating Asanas (one to two years)
9:00 am – Theory and practice; a step-by-step demonstration and explanation 
10:30 am – Group practice with each other; specialized breathing exercises and relaxation techniques to increase concentration and reduce hyperactivity; 
11:30 am - Instructions on setting up a personalized Yoga Program for each child. 
12:15 pm – Meditation 
12:45 pm – Chanting 
1:00 pm – Lunch and rest period
2:00 pm - Video presentation and/or hands-on individual instruction with children. 
2:30 pm – Demonstration with a child in the Interactive Stage 
3:15 pm – Demonstration with a child in the Interactive or Imitative Stage 
4:00 pm- Group discussion of work with children – questions and answers. 
4:30 pm – End of the day
1 hr – Homework – Read Appendix A and B of program manual; breath observation. 

Day 6 - The Imitative Stage – Developing Independence (two to three years), Yoga for Children and Adolescents
9:00 am – Complete Hatha Yoga class for the Imitative Stage with the participants 
10:30 am - Video presentation of children’s group classes taught by Sonia at her center in Brazil.
11:30 am - The benefits of group integration; the value of mainstreaming the child with special needs in a children’s Yoga class; Group discussion – Questions and Answers. 
12:30 pm – Meditation 
1:00 pm – Lunch and rest period
2:00 pm - Description of the methods and techniques employed with children and adolescents in group classes including: how to teach asanas, pranayama, relaxation, chanting and cleansing practices 
3:00 pm - Color therapy: a brief overview of the physical and psychological effects; How to use color to enhance a Yoga session. 
3:30 pm - Benefits and risks of the inverted postures, a brief summary. 
4:30 pm – End of the day
1 hr – Homework – breath observation; detachment.        

Day 7 – Program summary
9:00 am - Program summary and evaluation; How to set up your own practice; Group discussion and closing comments; 
Presentation of Credit Hours. 
12:00 pm – End of the Program    

The teacher will be working with children for demonstration purposes Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Demonstration sessions will be scheduled on different days depending on the child’s age and level of development.  Sessions will last between 25 – 40 minutes each.
