Type of Event
Chances are good that at some point you have experienced back or neck pain; sharp, dull, throbbing, pinching or bordering on immobility. For most people, the specific cause is unclear. It can be anything from overuse to sitting for hours to stress. Whatever the reason, yoga has been clinically proven to relieve back pain. It is also a pro-active way to avoid back injuries by strengthening the musculoskeletal system. Yoga addresses back pain from a whole body perspective – physical, mental and spiritual. The energetic interpretation of the back side is the “shadow side” of our consciousness – out of site, out of mind – until it hurts, and then we call it bad names. Where there is no one-size-fits all approach to yoga for healthy backs, some styles of yoga and specific poses are too vigorous for painful backs. Yoga becomes a therapeutic tool by emphasizing the breath, simple and repetitive movements, mindful awareness and careful sequencing. It is not about mastering the postures.
This workshop will let you safely explore therapeutic alignment principles and meditative movement for the back that can be applied in class and at home. Whether you are new to yoga or you have done yoga before and had to modify or discontinue your practice to accommodate back pain, the intention is to send you home with some simple poses for the back. Yoga for Back Care is appropriate for anyone who experiences acute or chronic back pain that is not under a doctors supervision and can get up and down off the floor. GENTLE/THERAPEUTIC
