Do you long to ride freely on the back of a beautiful horse into the breathtaking and magical Icelandic wilderness and just totally remove yourself from your everyday life…..or, are you wondering whether you have enough experience with horses, if your body will handle all the riding each day, or whether you will experience panic, fear, frustration…?
Riding Iceland is specifically tailoring the Yoga and Riding Tour in July 2014 to offer all horse lovers the opportunity to enjoy the Riding Iceland Experience, whatever your doubts, fears or level of riding experience. If you feel your dream is out of reach, then we have an amazing week tailored for you, offering you all the guidance and expertise to take you far beyond whatever you thought possible.
This magnificent Riding Tour in the South of Iceland will start each day with a 90 minute yoga session, followed by a hearty and healthy breakfast to prepare you for the excitement of the afternoon’s journey on horseback into the incredible surrounding landscape of this remote and untouched area.
We will return to our base camp each evening for a delicious and welcoming dinner to refuel our energy levels for the following day, exchanging stories of the wonders we have seen along the trails, and the individual personalities of the horses that carried us that day.
The riding trails will lead us through countryside only accessible by horseback or foot, covering vast areas of pseudocraters and mossy lava fields, which are the aftermath of some of the most well known volcanic eruptions from the 1700’s that had devastating effect not only on the population of Iceland, but also globally. We will ride along the Eldvatn (River of Fire) past majestic waterfalls, and master the unique gait, the Tölt, of our faithful Icelandic horses, as they smoothly and courageously carry us along our journey while we delight in the wonders of nature around us.
The price includes all yoga sessions, personal coaching, expert riding tips and advice, accommodation, food, drinks and return transfer from Reykjavik to our base camp (incorporating stops on the way, for viewing one of the most famous waterfalls in Iceland, the Seljalandfoss waterfall, and the unbelievable black beach of Reynisfjara to see if we can spot the white bellied puffins resident there!)
This unique week with yoga is suitable for all levels of rider and yogis, and is specifically geared for horse lovers who are making their first riding tour on Icelandic horses, riders who wish to regain lost confidence with horses, or those who would like a little more individual attention to give them the support they need to thoroughly enjoy this incredible journey in one of the world’s most spiritually energized countries.
Each riding day will be fully supported by a yoga practice expertly put together to teach the rider new techniques to improve their riding experience on the Icelandic Horse. Yoga sessions on the mat, will be tailored to develop balance, control, posture, comfort, safety and security whilst on the horse, to ensure that your time in the saddle is pure pleasure and delight. Deep stretching designed to loosen tight, blocked or aching muscles, increase flexibility in the hip and lower back area and deepen your riding seat and loosen up your legs, will give you your first experience of “self massage” – and the wonderful feeling of relaxing and just letting go, leaving you refreshed and ready to fully enjoy the next day’s adventure.
We will learn various reaffirming mantras for you to repeat at anytime you need a little personal reassurance, and breathing techniques which can be used to calm the horse and rider, slow down the horses pace, and even assist to stop the horse completely! By learning to breathe to the rhythm of the horse’s movement you will slowly start to feel yourself and your horse harmoniously moving together, resulting in that unforgettable moment where you both become one – horse riding is yoga!
Guided meditation will be offered daily, to calm, focus and still the mind. These meditation techniques will allow us to experience all the sensations in the body, and will also address any fears or tension in the rider, offering the perfect remedy to build courage, confidence and trust between you and your horse.
In this incredible week of personal growth, self development, fun, laughter, nature, friends, horses, great food and total freedom, we will spend as much time deepening our knowledge and understanding of ourselves as we will of the horse, this is the chance to experience your dream – make it your reality…….

Day 1: Eystri-Dalbær - Hunkubakkar
The bus will pick us up at our hotel in Reykjavík and take us to the farm Eystri-Dalbær where we meet our horses. The riding trail this day is through the amazing Landbrotshólar which is an extensive area of pseudocraters. Pseudocraters form when lava flows into rivers or wetlands and heavy explosions occur as the water boils instantly. We end the day at Hunkubakkar farm located close to the town of Kirkjubæjarklaustur.
Day 2; Hunkubakkar - Botnar
We start the day by a welcome yoga class to ease any sore muscles and prepare ourselves for the day ahead, followed by breakfast. We drive back to where we left the horses and ride an old road through a rough lavafield. The trail is good but the landscape on each side is very rough, consisting of apal lava covered my moss. We end the day at Botnar farm, where we leave the horses and drive back to our base camp.
Day 3: Botnar - Syðri Fljót
After Yoga and breakfast we drive to our horses and ride along the river Eldvatn (River of fire). We are again riding along the lavafield from the 1783 eruption of Lakagígar. Excellent ride in breathtaking surroundings.
Day 4 : Departure
After our final yoga sesson and a hearty breakfast we will be driven back to Reykjavik incorporating stops on the way, for viewing one of the most famous waterfalls in Iceland, the Seljalandfoss waterfall, and the unbelievable black beach of Reynisfjara to see if we can spot the white bellied puffins resident there!)
