About The Blue Butterfly retreat
The Blue Butterfly is a beautifully restored barn with facilities on the ground floor including a spacious studio / workshop area as well as a sitting room and fire place. This area is connected via a large covered veranda to the self-catering facilities in the form of the thatched, fully equipped, farm-style kitchen that can seat your whole party. The covered veranda / stoep opens onto a huge enclosed garden with trees, lawns, pergola and fishpond and a fire pit with an ample supply of fire wood. This area looks out onto a large camp with horses and zebra and borders the reserve as as the primary game conservation area. The Blue Butterfly has a total of seven bedrooms with a total of 18 single beds. The configuration is as follows: There are two en suite loft bedrooms upstairs that have separate entrances; each room with its own bathroom with shower and four single beds. There are two garden rooms each with their own separate entrance, a little sitting room, two single beds and a bathroom with shower en suite and finally, there are three davels (cabins) which each have two single beds and a bathroom with shower en suite. Should you require additional accommodation, there are four stone cottages, within walking distance of The Blue Butterfly.
The Blue Butterfly is situated in the Welbedacht Nature Reserve, just over an hour's drive from Cape Town. This stunning countryside retreat is just below the magnificent Winterhoek Mountains and offers a tranquil environment, nature walks, an abundance of bird life and flora and spectacular views of the Tulbagh valley.
There are several marked walking trails which meander through the fynbos, rhenosterveld and wetland areas of the reserve. The trails vary from 15 minutes to 2 hours. There is a swimming dam, surrounded by lush brush and trees and an abundance of bird life. A second dam inside the conservancy is stocked with wide mouth bass and tilapia.
Mountain bikers can enjoy various tracks and trails and these are maintained and managed by the newly established Tulbagh Mountain Bike Club. Trails on Welbedacht are free to use for our mountain biking guests. Additional outside trails are available for which a permit can be obtained from the Tulbagh Mountain Bike Club.
From the tall, leafy trees that provide shelter, to the fynbos with its vast variety of plant life and the savannah wetland grasses that provide an abundant food source for dozens of species of raptors and hundreds of other species, Welbedacht is a veritable haven for birds and birdwatchers alike.
Just five minutes' drive from Welbedacht, on one of the neighbouring farms, horse riding is available. Explore orchards, vineyards and mountain trails and take in the beautiful mountain views. All levels of riders are welcome.
Ten minutes' drive from Welbedacht is the historic town of Tulbagh. Take a stroll down Church Street which boasts a wealth of Cape Dutch architecture, several restaurants and stores, a museum and monuments. Olive groves, vineyards and orchards can be found in the surrounding areas, making Tulbagh a delight for fruit and wine lovers.
Here, away from the hustle and bustle of living, you may just find that all you long for is a book and a quiet, shady spot. You may wish to find a peaceful nook, let go of all distractions and immerse yourself in the immense beauty of the surrounding nature.
