IN THE TRADITION OF BKS IYENGAR
BKS IyengarIyengar Yoga, so coined after BKS Iyengar, who developed his own style based on the tradition of Pantanjali’s Eight Limbs of Ashtanga Yoga.
“ The first five components are our attitudes toward our environment,
our attitudes toward ourselves (yama and niyama), the practice of
the body postures (asana), the practice of breathing exercises
(pranayama), and the restraint of the senses (pratyahara). They are
easier to understand and attempt than the next three aspects.
These are the ability to direct our minds (dharana), the ability to
develop, faultlessly, our interactions with what we seek to understand
(dhyana), and complete integration with the object of our understanding
(samadhi).”
Patanjali’s Sutra’s 3.7 Translation by Desikachar.
Iyengar Yoga places emphasis on alignment, sequencing, precision and use of props. The practitioner not only develops strength and flexibility, but a sense of mental and physical well-being. Iyengar Yoga can be practiced by anyone, regardless of age or ability. The practice brings clarity and understanding to the underlying principles and philosophy.
At the age of 94, BKS Iyengar, now referred to as Guruji, lives with his family in Pune, India. Guruji continues to practice, teach, research and write. Like Guruji, his daughter, Geeta, son Prashant and grand daughter Abbey, have also devoted their lives to the art of yoga and have contributed enormously to shedding light on this ancient subject through their teaching.
