Cozy community studio

If you find yourself in Edmonton in the depths of winter, you will find no more comforting a yoga space than the one at Noorish. Tucked in the windowless basement under Edmonton's best vegan, gluten-free, superfoods restaurant, the space is dark, warm and inviting. Instructors turn the lights low and play groovy tunes all the way through to shavasana, and by that time the room is so warm you can fall asleep.

Highlights of their schedule include Jessica Ferguson's one-of-a-kind soul class on Wednesday nights, which has a mind-blowing Yoga Nidra session for 30 minutes at the end, as well as Andre Misle's challenging Friday night class -- he has the best playlists in the city bar far, and his classes are overflowing with inspiration and philosophy. Amanda Ings on Saturday creates a deeply spiritual space, with intensely creative classes that draw on her lengthy meditation retreats: think mantras, silence and freestyle yoga. Last but not least, Brittany Rudyk on Sundays is a teacher who runs sweet and compassionate classes that draw heavily from her intensive study of the sutras; she is in a young body at the moment but is certainly an old soul. She reminds me, actually, of Meghan Currie. Great studio.
