Prakāśa was the name given to John-James by his teacher in Dharamsala, Yogi Sivadas. Its meaning, from the Sanskrit, means Light of Consciousness.
JJ is a Canadian author, former foreign service officer and soldier who has been clean & sober since August 13, 2001. He practiced Vipassana meditation, as taught by Goenka, from 2002 through 2012. His involvement in 12-Step work spans over a decade, and he has studied & experienced modern addiction treatment facilities in Northern Ontario, Arizona, and Hong Kong. JJ understands the disease concept of addiction at its most subtle levels and is practised at the application of a 12 Step program.
JJ studied Hatha Yoga (Sivananda and Ashtanga) in Dharamsala, India—the seat of the Tibetan Government in Exile and a very spiritual place. He also studied yoga in Hong Kong and completed another full Hatha Yoga Teacher Training in Ottawa, Canada. He has been certified by Amy Weintraub as a LifeForce Yoga Practitioner—Level 1. LifeForce Yoga uses evidence-based movement, sound and breath work to work with depression and anxiety, the most common co-occurring afflictions of addiction.
In 2012, JJ completed very intense Shamanic Yoga Teacher Training in Peru, and continues to incorporate the large body of knowledge acquired there into his own practice and teaching.
