My chod practice @ Shri Kali Ashram

During the years that I have been studying at Shri Kali Ashram, I have experienced the process of learning which I realized is a PROCESS of unlearning and getting knowledge both at the same time. While this was happening -and it still does- I perceived through my own state of mind. Sometimes from a place of fear and negative judgments, others with pink glasses on, which were simple obstacles to be removed at some point.

Apart from asanas, bhandas, pranayamas, walking massage as daily practices, self studies from traditional texts, the interaction with other human beings and a rainbow of situations that inevitablyy happen in a community, I received valueable information from teachers and also transmission by my masters Bhagavan Shri Shanmukha Anantha Natha and Shri Ma Kristina Baird, that helped me to start dropping those things that are not my true nature as a divine human being.

"Those things" belong to the so called "world of appearance or illusions", beautifully described by Kenneth Farnham Thornton II Zhamanizing, as an explanation of this youtube video on Chod Mantra

"Chod means “cutting through,” i.e., severing erroneous concepts about the world of appearances and all illusions regarding the existence of a personal self. The practice of chod is an advanced skilful method that enables practitioners to become free of clinging to false notions and beliefs regarding inherent existence of appearances and experiences and therefore of an individual self. Attachment and clinging to a self are forces that give rise to the defilements, which are the source of anguish and pain. Chod is the practice that enables disciples to understand emptiness of all appearances that are fit to arise and therefore can be apprehended. It is an exceptional practice.

One needs to eradicate unfavourable delusions and hindrances and accomplish favourable conditions in order to realize and manifest perfect awakening. Unfavourable conditions are all negative habits that conceal the pure vision of reality. There are three types of unfavourable conditions: (1) delusions caused by past evil deeds, (2) delusions that are present and manifest as disturbing and therefore harmful emotions and (3) the delusion of not knowing the true nature of all things. These delusions need to be purified. Furthermore, a disciple needs to accumulate favourable conditions, accomplished by practicing the six paramitas.

The six paramitas that a bodhisattva practices in order to achieve the highest goal of awakening are: generosity, ethical conduct, patience, joyful endeavour, meditation and wisdom-awareness. The first paramita (“perfection”) is transcendent giving that dissipates scarcity and wants that beings living in poverty endure. General generosity is giving clothes, food, medicine and other everyday necessities to those who are destitute.
Note: In order to practice chod, the sincere disciple must have received transmission and permission from an authentic lineage-holder. The transmission is a spiritual blessing that is passed down in an unbroken lineage, and as such protects the student on this quite advanced path of practice".

At Shri Kali, again, I have the opportunity to develop a pure and trustfulworthy friendship with my Guru who guides me in my chod practice in order to see well, to see from the place of abundance and compassion and strengh, to live my life in its full potential, to embrace the gift of existence, to share, to give, to love.

The most profound experience of my life

If i could give every human person a gift, it would be to invite them to Shri Kali Ashram for at least one month. I had been practicing the physical aspects of yoga for a few years, but when i went to shri kali ashram, my whole understanding of yoga, and myself began to take a beautiful form. This place is more than just a place to learn about yoga... its a school of life. in fact that is what tantra is, a study of the essential nature of life... essence of the essence.

I spent 6 months in Shri Kali, minus a visa run, and i gained a deeper understanding of life than i imagined possible. I remember excitingly writing in my journal when i was there that: "this is it, the answer to everything... fear is lack of knowledge, and i have the knowledge now, im cant wait to experience life through this clarity"

Besides the asana practice, which is a wonderful, relaxing, and balancing practice that all levels of yogis can benefit from... the lectures, and ancient texts, are rich beyond measure, and if you choose to, can liberate you with the highest principles of knowledge and truth.

I have so much love and gratitude for Baghavan, Ma Kris, and all the long term students and teachers who have co created this magical space for us to experience our true self.

Authentic and transformational tantra school

Shri Kali Ashram is an ashram that facilitates and supports real self inquiry. Shri Kali teaches traditional tantra, an authentic system which helps you connect to the source and flow in life.

I must admit before my first time at Shri Kali I was a little apprehensive as I have had some strange experiences at other tantric yoga schools, however this ashram feels like home. I have travelled from Australia to India 3 times in 2 years to spend time at this school and I hope to continue doing this for many years to come.

This school has had a huge positive impact on my life and I have feel extremely grateful to have been blessed with the teachings of Bhagavan and those who have learnt under him.

If you want to learn how to let go of fear, connect with your true self and find freedom go to Shri Kali (with an open mind). xx

Life Transforming experience.

My name is Khaled,

I was at Shri Kali ashram for 5 months.

This place was absolutely amazing to me.
I had wonderful experiences there and I met hundreds of persons all amazed by the benefits of the teachings.

For sure, I am in love with the teachings of the Ashram.

I come from a Martial Art background and was french Kung-Fu Sanshu Champion. I had to stop my practice because of serious injuries in my shoulders. Solely moving my arms above my shoulders was a challenge for me. Even after going through surgery and years or physiotherapy, my pain wasn’t truly going away, neither did I feel healed.

The most precious gift I had from my experience at Shri Kali was to be able to heal myself by myself.

I gained serious self awareness and true empowerment by practicing meditation, relaxation and honesty with the support of the community and teachers.
After a couple of month, my pain completely disappear, I aligned my bones and gain strength and grace.

The teachings are amazing, as well as the yoga and of course the beach.
My strength and my flexibility were increased dramatically and I gained invaluable knowledge about myself, body systems, metaphysical principles, history, cutlures, and much more.

I definitely suggest this Ashram for doing a 200 hr course or 500 hr course.
I had my 500 hrs TTC done there and can't wait to return.

The food is amazing and the large menus are done with an understanding of Ayurvedic principles, which provides a balance and really healthy diet during the stay.
We can as we need and there is a really large variety of tasty food.

The classes are scheduled, it is necessary to attend the classes to complete the RYT Yoga Alliance hours, although we are encouraged to do what we feel right for ourselves one day at the time.

Objectively, I travelled the world for the past 8 years and going to Shri Kali Ashram was the single most life transforming experience I had in my life so far.

A true gift of experiencing the teachings at Shri Kali is to sense unconditional love, which allows me to witness beauty in all aspect of my life.

Thank you all.

Love Khaled

Pretty much the only place in India to study yoga in its purest form. Highly recommended, for anyone!

tools are here

To get a teacher training certificate this place is excellent. You will experience a traditional system that is deeply rooted and be able to have the confidence to share when you are going home. There is abundance in the series and supporting series so putting on different classes and workshops is definitely an option you will have after the training. Also plenty of opportunities to teach.

Beyond the teacher training there is something deeper for those that are looking for it. There is a chance to study very deep and beautiful metaphyics and how it relates directly with your personal expression in living your life. I found the tools here to help me see and experience the world in a more beautiful, integrated, ornate, and purposeful way than I imagined possible.

Second visit

I'm on my second visit to Shri Kali. I came first to find a traditional yoga school to enhance my teaching skills and personal development in the peaceful environment of rural Goa. I got much more than all that. I think there are few places in India and sadly the world where you can learn a whole system unchanged by time and history. Fortunately we have the opportunity to benefit from traditional systems in Schools like this one. The yoga practice is realaxing and subtly powerful and even if have no interest in Vedic knowledge it's worth the trip just to relaxxx and just let go :)

Incomparably Valuable

I can honestly say that the trajectory of my life changed for the better due to my time at Shri Kali Ashram. I came initially for a teacher training and found Shri Kali Ashram so valuable that I stayed on as long as my visa would allow. I immediately made plans to return and did so as soon as possible. During my time here I've seen many people do that same, and it's no surprise.

The knowledge of the school's teacher, Bhagavan Shri Shanmukha Anantha Natha, is unparalleled in all aspects of yoga and tantra, and also is his ability to guide students to realize the relevance of the spiritual science in all cultures and all aspects of life. Though I effectively developed the ability to share the tantra yoga with others through the teacher training program, that benefit is incomparable to the benefit these teachings have had on my own life by correcting my worldview and allowing me to develop by letting go of fears and learning to truly honor myself and others.

A beautiful preservation of a timeless science.

Let me start by saying that Shri Kali Ashram has been nothing short of life changing for me. Bhagavan Shri Shanmukha Anatha Natha has preserved a traditional and organic science known as Tantra in an untainted and pure form. As most who come have not encountered someone as well studied and mastered as Bhagavan, it can be troublesome and intense for those who come with expectations.

That being said, if you come wanting to learn and are willing to commit and trust in the program you will find yourself enriched and receiving teachings you literally cannot and will not find anywhere else. There is no other place and certainly no other teacher as well versed in Tantra, yoga and a wide range of other topics as Bhagavan Shri Shanmukha Anatha Natha. If all you want is to be able to facilitate a yoga class, you will get adequate information to fulfill all Yoga Alliance requirements, not to worry. There have been many successful RYT-200 and RYT-500 students who have completed the teacher training and come out as exemplary yoga teachers. The asana series taught at Shri Kali is one of relaxation, meditation and letting go. The beauty of this asana series comes from building trust with your teacher, letting go of everything and relaxing. My personal progression was fast. As I let go and stopped competing with others and myself, once I closed my eyes and let the asanas express, I found a sense of peace and freedom I could not have imagined was within me. For those who are familiar with the movie "The Karate Kid" the teaching at the ashram is kind of like that. We experience the yoga first, and then talk about it afterwards. This is how yogis and tantrics learned traditionally which is clever and efficient as it cuts out intellectualizing and competing while allowing us to experience ourselves. You learn to sense and culture body feel rather than worrying about how an asana should look or feel.
The richness of this Ashram comes from the "non-required" material covered at the school, from the tantric culture that Bhagavan has chosen to share and preserve via his teachings, to the walking massage we do every morning. The level of enrichment one can get at this place is still mind-blowing to me. Many have come to the school to learn yoga and have come away with a better understanding of other aspects of their life, i.e. psychologists, physicists, linguists, dancers, martial artists, etc. The teachings I have received have enriched my relationships, my worldview and have made me a more wholesome human being in the truest sense. Tantra has given me the tools to be honest. There have been some obscene accusations about the ashram and I am surprised that people are capable of being so nasty. It is hurtful to read and see. People say Bhagavan is never around, that he does not make time to talk to students.etc. One must understand that Bhagavan will smile and say hello to everyone, will share love with any person he meets, but one thing I have never seen him do is waste his or a students time. With people coming so many miles from many different countries to learn and study a science as complex and involved as Tantra, Bhagavan commits ALL of his time to those who want to learn. Many times he has stayed up into early morning hours without any sleep explaining the intricacies of this science as we happily take notes and laugh at the occasional joke. Let us not forget that he is a human being. He gives himself to those who love and want to learn tantra and does not bother with those who want to argue or bicker about nonsense. It is also silly to expect to fly half way around the world and study an anatomy book. While we do cover these things to put new students at ease, no where else in the world would it be accepted to enter into advanced level classes without first meeting the prerequisites. We see it easier to study the simple stuff at home and benefit from the information you cannot get except the ashram from Bhagavan. I do not why people get frustrated when after a week we are not talking about concepts that take years to understand.
I cannot say enough about the beauty of this ashram and how grateful I am to have found it. The fact that Bhagavan Shri Shanmukha Anatha Natha and Shri Kali Ashram has so many long term students should be a beacon of assurance to those who are swayed by the very few negative reviews. This place has benefitted and enriched so many lives. Shri Kali Ashram has given me so much and I am thankful to be able to share that with my family and those I teach back home. I can say with the utmost sincerity that I will study Tantra Yoga as taught at Shri Kali Ashram for the rest of my life and will preserve the science by sharing it with my wife and children. You will get more than a certification here; you will get a wholesome perspective on being alive and a beautiful life culture.

About the teacher training itself. There are a few options, as one can see on the site, for teacher trainings and tantric initiations. Some students come as an introduction into facilitating and sharing a yoga class while others come to deepen their understanding of Tantra and the inner mechanics of this yoga system. This school offers detailed introductions with open ends for furthering study, giving students an idea of what comes next, thus optimizing every moment for 200hr students. For 500 hr students these topics are explored further going deeper and more specific into Anatomy, Yoga Theory and such topics and for those who are wanting to explore Sanskrit beyond knowing the Asana names, Shri Ma Kristina Baird teaches Sanskrit classes. As listed on the Shri Kali website, Ma Kristina has a B.A. (Hons.) in Religious Studies from Otago University (N.Z.) with Honors papers in Sanskrit from Australian National University. When she is not answering the emails of the many students wanting to come to the Ashram to study, she helps students understand and clarify any difficulties they may have with their studies. She is very well versed in Tantra and has been a great help to me personally in accelerating my understanding of difficult concepts. In addition to this, Ma Kristina brings a sense of Tantric culture to the school which I've come to appreciate dearly. You won't find more intelligent, helpful or sincere people as you will at Shri Kali ashram, truly. Another brilliant teacher is Whitney Wheelock. He has been studying with Bhagavan for 8 years now I believe. His patience and way of explaining complicated concepts in simple and easy to understand terms alleviates frustrations that students sometimes experience when facing new terminology and ideas. He helped me tremendously when I first arrived at the ashram four years ago and to this day is easy to talk to about anything and still clarifies things for me with the more complex things I am studying. Whitney also leads the classes at times with expert precision and mastery, and truthfully, I've not noticed any difference in the way he or Bhagavan leads the class. Having him around is a true blessing. Whitney has mastered the art of sharing a relaxing and meditative class and as far as the teacher training program goes having him around to go over the minor details of the training, I believe, gives the students a more in-depth understanding of the things we cover and better prepares them to teach once they return home. This is what I as a new student came to love about Shri Kali, that there are many people there to support Bhagavan, all who are very qualified and who understand Tantra Yoga very extensively that will drop anything in order to better your understanding and help you progress. I cannot say enough about this place.

Shri Kali Ashram has been an integral aspect of my liberation. The Traditional perspective on Tantra and Yoga preserved here is based on the metaphysical understanding of the cosmos and thus allows students to situate themselves in their cosmic perspective. Through the yoga practices, the scripture/texts, the Puja, the community and the connection with Bhagavan you get the opportunity to know a real experience of your true Self. The greatest gift of human potential.

The practices will challenge you to break out of the many boxes you have unwittingly placed yourself in through the doctrine of your culture, breaking you open to allow the Ultimate experience to shine through. By learning to truly relax, the ultimate state can finally be the experience of the experient.

I will study with Bhagavan as long as he will teach.

Ashram Review: Disappointed

Quite simply, I had a bad experience at the Shri Kali Ashram in India. I don't even like talking about it, but I believe it should be said for the record.

For starters, they claim “Tantra Yoga” is taught at the Ashram -- hah! They teach glorified Hatha with some tantric intellectual concepts thrown in. They also do some kind of Ayurvedic massage in the morning to create a somewhat Tantric feeling at the Ashram, but it is fully clothed and very sterile -- there is no Tantric energy in it, at least of the red variety. In terms of powerful mysticism, it's not present at the Ashram in my experience.

I will say that the Guru of the Ashram has the power to get into your head; once your start thinking about him, you may not be able to stop. Consider it a warning to all who read this review: he and his disciples are cultish in some respects in their teachings and dealings with others. They are totally in love with the Guru; it was kind of funny to watch his spell unfold over them, but also weird. Warning: Either you are in with them and their Guru, or you’d better get out of there!

Also note that the Guru only teaches Yoga once in the evening, but never practices it himself, which was disappointing. Most of the classes are taught by long-term students. Some of them are quite good at it, but most of them were lacking in what I like to refer to as "Grace Yoga". Only certain Yogis attain this, but it wasn’t present at the Ashram, that’s for sure.

But on a positive note, India itself, in my experiences outside of the Ashram, was great. I spent time with the locals; some were walking mystics, incredible by western standards, especially when they went out of their way to take me to many of the Temples in the area. Note: Turtle beach, which is located just across from the Ashram is truly amazing -- I and many others from the Ashram absolutely loved it.

I will return to India one day, but I will be more careful and do more research on an Ashram before I hand them thousands of dollars.

Note: They did refund some of my money; I will give them credit for being somewhat financially responsible. Airfare was expensive and the Ashram was a disappointment, but at least I did get to see Goa, Bombay and some of the real India!

Namaste to all fellow Tantric seekers of greater knowledge and experiences; I hope to meet you at a real Tantra Ashram some day soon!

“It is a womanly thing to establish superiority through convincing arguments; it is a manly thing to conquer the world through one's power. Reasoning, argument, and inference may be the work of other schools; but the work of the Tantra is to accomplish superhuman and divine events through the force of their own words of power.” —Tantrattva

The only place in the world to learn Tantra = science

I came to the Shri Kali Ashram in Oct. 2014 as a student how never did yoga before, however hoping to learn about the science, therefore philosophy, behind it. What I found was far more than that: if you really let go of all you thought you knew as valid about the world you live in and emerge yourself into a perhaps new dimension of knowledge for all the people coming from the so-called West, then you will be come the happiest being.

An irreversible transformation will happen as you read the ancient books after having read the the guru's books (masterpieces of the scientific world since at least 3-4 centuries ago). And this inner transformation will reflect on your whole "outter world". It is my deepest belief that each person should visit this ashtray least for 1 month in their lifetime.
In highest respect of my teachers at the Shri Kali Ashram and to my guru.

Where Yoga Practice Became a Path

Shri Kali Ashram is an incredible yoga school. It is here that I truly understood yoga as a life-long joyous and ever-deepening path. The asana practice is the most meditative that I have come across. The lectures provide guidance on what tantra yoga is doing on the various and interconnected aspects of our self. Highly recommend this school.

If you are looking for the TRUE essence of yoga and Tantra..

In today's world, we are innendated with choice and in the world of yoga, a world wide trend, the options are endless.

I had already been teaching for some years and practicing for some time but the deeper I went in to this practice and the more dedicated I became to sharing the knowledge of yoga and Tantra, I knew I needed an experience that really went below the surface of what is commonly taught as yoga (mostly just asana) and also something that was going to the source of Tantra, not just neo-Tantra. I had a good feeling about this place.

Now, I have been here for three months and I am not leaving any time soon. Bhagavan's wisdom as well as the rest of the teachers here facilitate a serious space for study and practice. This, I found, is a rare opportunity to TRULY understand the science of both yoga and Tantra and it turns out, ayurveda too. The asana, pranayama and bandhas practice, if one trusts and relaxes, will take your whole system to a new level of grace and efficiency. The serious study of the Vedas and Tantras is powerful and completely alters the way one views themselves and the world.

If you are looking to really experience a system that offers full integration, depth and integrity of teachings, then I would be sure to look in to Shri Kali.

My Shri Kali Ashram experience

I have arrived at the ashram at the beginning of March 2014, intending to study for one month to receive the 200 hour yoga teacher certificate. I have found the teaching programme to be excellent. Every morning, we had a class of the Ayurvedic walking massage, which is a very unique and beneficial massage technique to learn. The walking massage was followed by an hour and a half of yoga.

The main yoga series taught here is the tri dosha balancing series, which is series that is designed to balance the doshas within the body (doshas-elements each human being consist of , according to ayurveda ). I have practiced other yoga systems before arriving at Shri Kali Ashram, including Bikram for 2 years, and Ashtanga . I have The yoga system I have learnt here, I have found to be a unique meditative, strength enhancing series. The surroundings in Goa were beautiful. I have decided to stay on for another 2 months after completing the one month teacher training course. Many of the students arriving here for one month, decide to stay for longer periods of time. Now the ashram has temporarily moved to Penang, Malaysia. We are happy here, living in very comfortable apartments in a resort with a swimming pool. The teaching quality and content is still the same, as it was in Goa, only the setting has changed. We practice Yoga and have lectures in a Kali temple on the beach , near a fishing village. The philosophy lectures given here are very enriching , as well as the Sanskrit lectures. Anatomy and thorough technical lectures are also given here. This course gives the students an all-round understanding of the Yoga system. Each student gets to teach classes. At the beginning of the course, it’s one third of a class, and by the end of the course it’s whole classes. In the afternoon we have a 3 hour long yoga class, which each day advances the students in their practice. The teachers here are very helpful, honest people. They are like family to us, students and we can turn to them for support with any issue we might have. I am looking forward to sharing what I have learnt here when I return to London. I will definitely be returning to learn more. This is one of very few schools around teaching real, traditional tantric knowledge and Sanskrit .
Through the knowledge acquired here, I have been able to get rid of many negative personality traits and have discovered the value of patience, dedication and wholeness. This course is an all-round, self-sustainable and self-sufficient program that brings the best out of the students and lets them see their true potential.
Happiness and freedom are the flowers of knowledge.

real tantra

After selling my business in Australia and freeing myself up I arrived to Shri Kali Ashram to initiate a deeper inquiry through relaxation, enrolling in a 3-month yoga course. Now I’m into my 5th month at the ashram and am enjoying the fruits of what this intricate traditional system has to offer.

Once I realised the intention from which this ashram was founded, which is Love, it became very easy to allow all facets of Shri Kali Ashram to work on me – the guidance, the yoga, lectures, texts, pujas, the food...

For anyone seeking to know his or her self gently and deeply, I honestly recommend Shri Kali Ashram. The authenticity felt during my personal processes has assisted a priceless shift toward real inner transformation.
