Seeking union of mind body and spirit defines all yoga, and how we realize this wholeness (oneness?) becomes the light and fire of all true yoga practice. Without this mindfulness, there are only mundane routines and clever techniques.
Kripalu means compassion. In Kripalu yoga no one directs us to a Path. We are empowered to self-initiate inner experiences through proper alignment in postures (asanas), consciousness and control of breath (pranyama), and meditation, which function as stepping-stones to life’s journeys.
Steady practice of the postures is the first stage. In the second stage postures are held longer as we develop concentration and inner awareness. The third stage is about honouring the wisdom of the body, allowing the ego to be the witness and the body to be the true teacher.
Classes are suitable for every one of all ages and levels of fitness. In the mixed classes we emphasize asanas and the proper use of breath to increase the flow of energy into the body, to reduce stress and to improve circulation, flexibility and strength. Constant attention is paid to safety and comfort.
Participants in Level II have previous Kripalu experience and are firmly and safely anchored in the physical postures. They move more deeply into postures with breath awareness and learn how to push their own edge safely and with compassion.
However, in Kripalu Yoga, the primary focus is never about how deeply we move into a posture or how we look compared to others. The heart of our practice is to be in tune with our whole being in the moment, gracing ourselves with acceptance of who we are. Kripalu yoga is practiced not only on the mat but even more so, “off the mat”.
The practice of Kripalu yoga does not provide easy answers but opens doors so we may marvel at what we find within. It is not intended to teach us how to stand on our head but how to better stand on our own two feet.
