A true sanctuary in the middle of a busy city

The Yoga Sanctuary at college is like a second home for my partner and me. We take classes there, have done trainings there, and even teach there (full disclosure: Every word I type here is of my own volition!).

The main studio is a converted ballroom. It is like something right out of a movie with vaulted ceilings, and "Mad Men" elegance abounding. The minute you walk in you feel the crush of downtown Toronto melt away.

The staff are all friendly yogis and yoginis at heart, and they understand people are coming from stressful day-jobs and need to get in, get their yoga fix, and get home to feed their kids and what not. They really do a great job of streamlining the admin stuff and resolving issues quickly and fairly.

And as one of the longest running Yoga studios in Toronto, TYS has built up a cadre of flexible teachers. There is pretty much representation of every major style taught by people from all walks of life.

In fact, it is hard to pick a weak point (bias is showing). If I had to, perhaps the fact that most of the time you'll have to climb a few flights of stairs to get up to the studio (the elevator only operates at certain times). But, heck, you came to a yoga studio to get some exercise, right?

Finally, I can't say enough about the owners (Cynthia, Kimberley, Orlando, and their families), they provide a much needed service in a community where you often feel like just a number. They care, and it shows in the people they take as clients and the people they surround themselves with.

Hope some more reviews appear here (with less bias), and hope this inspires someone to give the studio a try. It may become your 2nd home, too!
