Angela is the director of Yoga Kula Leeds and her main objective to opening the studio was to share the benefits of yoga with the local and wider community by offering high quality yoga classes, workshops, courses and retreats while growing a yoga community or ‘kula’ in Leeds and also supporting local teachers to develop.
Angela was introduced to Yoga while living in Japan as a way to manage her chronic back and neck pain (which she no longer suffers from!). In the process she became more flexible and strong both physically and mentally and found she was more able to deal with life’s challenges. Angela trained as a Yoga Teacher in a traditional Ashram setting in India in 2008 at a school connected closely with much respected Bihar School of Yoga. She went on to spend over a year studying intensively in India with a range of senior teachers including BKS Iyengar and his associates in Pune, Bharat Shetty, BNS Iyengar, Ajay Kumar, Balu Rajendran and Rolf and Marcie of Yoga Bones. Angela recently returned from a 5 week trip to India where she studied Ashtanga Yoga with Vijay Kumar and back bending with his brother Vinay Kumar. Both are known for their full dedication to the practice of yoga and their humble nature.
Angela has also studied with several senior teachers in West including David Williams, Brian Kest, Manju Jois, David Swenson, Richard Freeman, Kino Macgregor and more recently Julie Martin. Last year Angela completed a Jivamukti immersion at the London based studio and her immersion this year will be worth Shiva Rae who is an inter nation vinyasa teacher. Angela participates in regular workshops around the UK with senior yoga teachers and returns to India to study as often as she can so she can continue to evolve and develop both as a student and a teacher. Angela is interested in the history and origins of yoga and regularly studies philosophy with teachers such as Emil Wendal, the Mohan’s and Graham Burns (Graham often visits Yoga Kula Leeds).
Angela is dedicated to the practice of vipassana meditation and has been sitting a 10 day course annually for the past 7 years and has also offered selfless service to support the continued running of the courses, her dedication to meditation is reflected in her own practice and her teaching style. Angela also trained in bio dynamic breath work in 2011 with the Energy of Breath Institute, New York which taught her through direct experience the immense power of the breath to deeply heal and personally transform, which again informs her teaching and practice. Angela finds herself to be hugely inspired by her students’ dedication to yoga and enjoys seeing changes in both their practice and them as people! Angela believes Yoga is a powerful transformational tool which has completely changed her life and the lives of so many others around her. Her classes are dynamic whilst also being relaxing whilst offering the change to really look inside of ourselves. Angela teaches Vinyasa Flow, Ashtanga Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Yoga for Beginners, variety of workshops and the retreats at Yoga Kula. As well as teaching at and directing Yoga Kula Angela is also the resident massage therapist specialising in Ayurvedic Yoga Massage. She has been studying Ayurveda and Massage for over 7 years with teachers both in the UK and India. Angela had recently been appointed as the Leeds Yoga Ambassador for Sweaty Betty.
