International Yoga Alliance ERYT 500 Certified Yoga Instructor, REPs (UK) Certified Advanced Level Personal Trainer and Dietician/ Nutritionist. Owner of Marulamala Yoga Studio, Hoedspruit, South Africa.
Catherine has practised yoga since 1999 and taught since 2006. She teaches a variety of group and private classes with a base at her studio in Hoedspruit together with her team of wonderful teachers, and around the world at various locations. She was engaged exclusively by an infamous IT entrepreneur for three years as his Yoga Teacher, Personal Trainer and Nutritionist, which eventually led her to discover and fall in love with South Africa.
Before teaching Catherine had a successful career as a corporate lawyer. While working in Japan, and soaking up the influences there, her fledgling yoga practice grew into her passion and it became an integral part of her life. This passion grew into a love for teaching and sharing that passion. Catherine's natural tendencies favour dynamic movement and anything physically challenging. Her early background as a competitive runner and tri-athlete swayed her towards the more dynamic forms of yoga initially. Her foundations lie in the vinyasa flow style and the traditional practice of Ashtanga, which she studied intensively for many years and which still largely shapes her personal practice. However, a combination of experience and many years teaching has also brought to the fore the importance of finding balance with more restorative and therapeutic practices and a strong focus on meditation.
Fascinated with anatomy study and injury recovery, Catherine also qualified as an advanced level personal trainer. She works successfully with clients combining both modalities. Currently she is exploring the connection with yoga therapy and the trauma release exercise method (TRE) combined with her study of Thai Yoga Massage. Catherine is very grateful to have studied with and be mentored by some of the most experienced, inspiring and leading teachers in the yoga world as well as in life. Education and continuing self development is vital and Catherine loves to study and adapt new interpretations as they link to the more traditional practices (and of course from her own students!). Maintaining the traditional lineage of teaching however, she endeavours to pass on her experience, sharing her practice and encouraging her students to play, have fun and to continue the exploration for themselves.
