Fiona MacLeod has been teaching classes locally in Central Portugal since 2008, and on retreats since 2012. She places great importance on integrated health, and empowerment through self awareness, self knowledge and personal growth.

Growing up in Australia she was introduced to embodiment practices as a child through the typical path of ballet, tap and ‘jazz’ dance. She then found yoga as a secondary school sports option, an alternate to team sports!! She was also introduced to the practice of Tai Chi through her mother from the age of 15 until she left home at 17.

She is currently a mother of three, living and working in Central Portugal.

She has been teaching yoga to friends since 2007, and then completed a 500 hour (RYT) formal training to teach in 2009 at Byron Yoga Centre in Australia.

She is also an artist and teacher, having completed a BFA at UNSW Sydney, Australia (1990-1993). A Post-graduate diploma in Fine Arts at Chelsea College of the Arts, London (2001-2002) and a PGCE at The London Institute of Education (2002-2003). She worked as a secondary school art teacher in London before moving to Portugal.

It was during five formative years of travel throughout Asia between 1995 – 2000 that her passion for yoga, meditation, and personal practice developed.

She has been fortunate to study with many teachers and methods, and truly embraces the wide variety of methods and techniques she has been exposed to.

Her teaching style is a mix of alignment based slow vinyasa, pranayama and meditation, a variety of alternative movement practices and yoga nidra. She has become very interested in an intuitive somatic approach while still maintaining the integrity of the individual yoga postures. She also practices the more embodied meditative practices of Kashmir Shaivism.

She places great importance on slowing down, allowing time for the subtleties of the postures to be absorbed by our bodies, and for the magic of the practice to be discovered by individuals themselves, rather than overloading with instruction.

From 2012 until 2017, Fiona facilitated and taught on retreats at her own off-grid eco friendly yoga retreat. As well as teaching retreat weeks, she also prepared the majority of the food, and guided younger, newer teachers and a small team of volunteers.

Unfortunately she lost her retreat centre in the October wildfires in Portugal 2017. This overwhelming traumatic experience has only deepened her resources and her practice. She holds faith that yoga, and embodied movement practices, yoga nidra and meditative movement, can truly save your life.

In 2010 she founded an off grid eco retreat in Portugal and in 2016, These retreats are integrated health retreats designed for normal people, incorporating safe yoga in a non-competitive environment, movement, yoga nidra, meditation and nutritious healthy vegetarian food.

She continues her further education whenever she can;

· completing both pre and post- natal teacher training with Bliss Baby Yoga (through Byron Yoga Centre – Australia) in 2013

· a year long intensive yoga anatomy course with Leslie Kaminoff, Author of Yoga Anatomy in 2012

· a one to one series of teleconference classes with Liz Koch, author of Core Awareness in 2016

· she is currently studying a yoga for fertility course through Bliss Baby Yoga.

Ultimately she aims to teach a whole and safe practice and to leave other practitioners with the same depth of profound experience and magic that she experiences herself. She hopes to transmit her passion for the practice to others with love and care, and to always create a trusting space for the yoga to happen.

The perfect retreat for my mum, sister and I

Thank you so much for the perfect retreat for my mum, sister and I! You and your family made us feel very welcome. We loved staying in the comfortable Yurts, being close to nature, living sustainably, eating tasty foods from the garden and using natural local handmade soaps. The variety of vegetarian food was amazing and we enjoyed chatting with our fellow yogis over meal times.

The yoga and meditation sessions varied throughout the week and offered challenge and serenity which enabled us to go deeper in to our yoga practice. It was fun to walk down to the Lake for a swim and explore the local village. I enjoyed reading the wide range of books available in the hammocks in the shade and sun and the opportunity to unwind with massages. It was a real treat to go in the hot tub and have local Portuguese wine with a fire on the last night. I will recommend this special experience to everyone!

Wonderful Yoga Retreat

Thank you so much for the wonderful retreat. I feel inspired and reenergized after a week full of yoga and meditation, yummy food and amazing people.
It was a good balance between yoga and free time. There was enough time to relax, to get inspired by the many yoga books available and to have a hike to and a swim in the reservoir.
I loved the yoga and meditation classes, my body is stronger, softer and my mind more clear and calm then before.

Fiona and Nuno are amazing hosts, taking care of the group and involve you into their ecological way of living.
This was exactly what I was looking for. The hot tube at the last evening was a great experience. Singing songs around the campfire enjoying a glass of local wine made this evening even more memorable. Thank you again, I would love to come back in the future. Lots of Love Melanie

I had the great pleasure of experiencing Fiona's two yoga classes located at her beautiful yoga Yurt retreat in Portugal.
Fiona is a beautiful yoga teacher who gives her students the attention and support they need.
Her calming voice guides you gently through the meditations and leaves you totaly relaxed.

I had an amazing time at the Portugal yoga retreat.
It's one of the most beautiful, peaceful and free spirited places I have been to.

Experienced teacher, perfectly balanced classes.

I followed a 1 week retreat with Fiona. I was happily surprised that it was more challenging than expected (but I wasn't trained and I'm definitely not a morning person). I find her to be a very well balanced professional, delivering organized classes and caring for our specific daily issues. I really appreciated how she shared her extensive knowledge without dogmatism, being able to give us, on a certain topic, a range of options and explanations.
Plus, general atmosphere and environment were excellent.
A few weeks later, my mind on body are still infused with positive effects.

A very restful, calming, friendly eco retreat. Just what was needed. Loved the yurt accommodation. Food was yummy and very healthy. Fiona provided the teaching which supported our individual needs. Lots of time for reflection. Hot tub and fire under the stars was something I'll always remember. Will definitely return :-)
