My name is Iir Prihatinawati, I am a teacher registered with Yoga Alliance UK. I come from the Indonesian island of Borneo. I moved to Cambridge in summer 2015, and have been teaching in Cambridge ever since.

My yoga journey began early in life to help with asthma, gradually evolving into regular asana practice. I have been practicing yoga for more than half of my life and indeed yoga has become a way of life, however I had never planned to be a yoga teacher. During my home practices in Indonesia, friends started coming over to join me – and this grew into my earlier taught classes. Before I knew it, I was teaching yoga long before obtaining my first teaching qualification.

In 2015 just before moving to Cambridge I graduated from Frog Lotus Yoga (FLY) International specialising in teaching Vinyasa. I chose Vinyasa after having explored many other styles of yoga. My personal practice is strongly influenced by Vinyasa, Forrest and Ashtanga, although sometimes I switch into Iyengar, Yin, Hot Yoga and Jivamukti. I completed Forrest Yoga Advanced Teacher Training with Ana Forrest in August 2016, which I found deeply empowering.

Prior to becoming a yoga teacher, I taught languages for 12 years, so teaching is something I am very familiar with. With my Masters Degree in Psychological Education, I bring my understanding of progression into my classes. I break poses into smaller components and sequence mindfully and intelligently to reach a peak pose, with strong emphasis on the breath-movement connection, integrity and mindfulness.

My classes are generally characterised by three key elements.

1. Connection between breath and movement. Focusing on your breathing encourages you to focus on your own body rather than those around you, making you more aware of its strengths but also its limitations.
2. Asana integrity and hands-on assists. By moving around the class as I teach, I help you become more aware of your muscular activity, keeping your body correctly aligned in each pose and engage the relevant muscles, which allows you to get deeper into the pose.
3. Mindfulness. As you focus within, maintaining your muscular integrity, you are encouraged to understand yoga as a personal journey of physical and mental fulfilment and improvement. Everyone follows their own journey in life and in yoga, but all living bodies are a wonder. Appreciate yours not what it can’t do, but for what it can.

Excellent, thorough, enabling teacher

Iir is a great teacher. She is very aware of her students' abilities and individual physical needs and capabilities. Over a few months, she enabled me to do a number of asanas I never thought I'd be able to do, including headstand. She is safety focussed, and yet demanding. I am amazed at what I am able to do in her classes, and yet I know that I am never being pushed into something that is unsafe for me. She demonstrates well and sets postures up step by step, so that when I practise on my own, I remember the steps she has run us through.

An honest review

I first went along to one of Iir's classes as a total beginner to yoga, just wanting to try something different as a one-off. I enjoyed it so much that I went back the week after...and the week after that... Now I attend her classes 2-3 times a week & my partner has joined too.

Iir is a strong, wise & genuine person and that really comes through in her teaching. I have learnt so much from her that I carry through into my daily life & I cannot thank her enough for that.

Clear and careful instructions in yoga practice

Always a theme to the lesson and helpful cueing throughout. New exercises are demonstrated carefully before students attempt them. Excellent variety of exercises and final relaxation introduced with uplifting thoughts

Highly recommended

Iir is extremely friendly, very detailed in her explanations and her classes are always a challenge! She strikes me as very knowledgeable about the body and the corrections/adjustments for every individual. I would love to continue practicing with her.

Great teacher!

Iir is a very friendly and smiley person. She is always genuinely happy to see you. Her classes always have a really nice atmosphere. Quite variable in contente but you always come out with a smile on your face! She encourages you to think about yourself and your goals. She makes her classes fun by giving us little projects to work towards. I really love doing yoga with Iir!

Great yoga teacher

Having started yoga about 15 years ago, I can honestly say I have learnt a lot from Iir. She is very friendly, hands on and gives plenty of alternatives for pupils with different levels of experience. Myself and my colleagues are delighted to have her teach our lunchtime class.

Great yoga teacher!

I've been attending Iir's classes in Cambridge for about 3 months. She is very energetic and friendly but still pays a lot of attention to everyone's questions. I can only recommend her classes.

For a strong mind, body & heart

I have been doing yoga with Iir for a year on her Friday classes. From being a complete beginner, thanks to her teaching, I am stronger and more flexible, and have gained the confidence to continue my practice at home. Iir is an amazing teacher who understands the needs of the entire class; She makes sure that her students understood how to perform the poses and movements and how it affects their bodies.
Over this year, Iir is not just my yoga's instructor, but a true friend who lifts my spirits and pushes me to my limits every time but never past them.
For introducing yoga to my life, I thank her every day :-)

Best yoga experience

Iir's classes are relaxing and enjoyable. They are also quite a challenge at times but Iir always emphasizes to work within your body's potential without straining yourself.
I always feel a good stretch during Iir's classes and highly recommend trying a class with her.

Excellent, experienced Yoga teacher

Iir is very experienced and a great yoga teacher. A really friendly and approachable person and always puts the students first.
Definitely would recommend going to her classes and has a great way of progressing the techniques on each individual's capability.

Best teacher, fantastic classes

Iir's a wonderful teacher who cares about each of her students, will always try to address each individual's needs at their specific skill level and conducts her class with skill, humour and a personal touch. I love her class, learned so much about the interaction of muscles, joints and poses and always come away feeling energised and happy. I can only recommend.

Very focused and conscientious

After a class, I feel completely relaxed and much more calm and confident and my back problems are very much diminished. Iir has a lovely manner and tells you exactly how to position your body.

Review for Iir

I always enjoy my yoga sessions with Iir. Every class is different and she is just such a friendly and fun person that i very much look forward to every training session. She corrects poses if there aren't done correctly. After the class you feel that you have worked out but on the same time. I can only highly recommend coming to her classes.
