Like many people in America, Joan Chanpong’s introduction to yoga began as an outlet from the busy corporate world. A former synchronized swimmer in college, Joan found that yoga not only satisfied her love for fitness and movement, but also helped calm her mind and body through breath awareness, balance, and meditation.
After years of practice and experimenting with styles such as Hatha, Bikram and Power Vinsaya, Joan felt the need to share her knowledge so that others might reap the benefits of yoga too. She earned her 200-hour teacher training certification from Corepower Yoga, and set out with the goal of making yoga accessible to students of all levels.
Those who attend Joan’s classes can expect a focus on proper alignment, posture, and breath awareness. She frequently emphasizes breathing techniques during asanas and the use of props and modifications, so that everyone in her class is thoroughly challenged. It’s not uncommon for her to thoughtfully encourage students to go at their own pace in order to truly connect their bodies with a pose. Ever playful in her own practice, Joan enjoys bringing a warm heart and a sense of humor to her classes, believing that humility and compassion are the foundations of living a yogic life. Her goal is for her students to leave class feeling relaxed, happy and free in the body.
In addition to being a certified RYT, Joan has received extensive additional training in Anusara Yoga and Jivamukti Yoga, attending immersions and numerous workshops in both styles. Joan is also certified in Pre and Postnatal Yoga, and is an Alumni Ambassador for Lululemon Athletica.
Joan holds a BS from Miami University of Ohio, and an MA Ed. from the University of Illinois-Chicago. When not teaching classes, workshops or engaged in a yoga retreat, she enjoys traveling, cooking, reading, and dark chocolate.
