Great introduction to yoga practices and its vast history

I have done a yoga retreat with Johanne at her and Amando's place called Tambo Ilusion from Monday the 21st till Friday the 25th of April, 2014.

My time at Tambo Ilusion was an experience that went far beyond my expectations. I have never felt so relaxed, energized, and inspired, all at the same time. It is a perfect place to be introduced to the world of yoga and learn about a lifestyle aimed at living together with nature. After having left the jungle, I feel I am well supplied with the foundational background of yoga and mediation practices, and I am armed against any kind of stress I might encounter when returning to the working bee life in Europe again.

Although the main focus of the retreat was yoga, a practice that, at the time, was new to me, there was much more to it. Tambo Ilusion is blooming with activities and opportunities to connect with nature, yourself and come down again. In between the morning and afternoon yoga classes, I enjoyed swimming in the natural lake, a class in apicultura (bee keeping), a Reiki massage and a guided tour through the jungle, the house's back garden.

The hospitality that Johanne and Armando offer is of a rare kind. The warmth and care they have for their guests comes so naturally, you feel like royalty at your friend's home. The spacious tambo (little hut) I stayed in, was equipped with a very comfortable big double bed and hammocks outside. A great treat after an intense day of yoga, super food and walks through the jungle.

The cooking is delicious and fresh. Johanne knows a lot about nutrition and enjoys sharing her knowledge, recipes and food experiences. I tried many dishes, fruits, seeds and shakes I had never had before and I learned much about their various qualities. While enjoying these culinary creations, I have had many great and inspiring conversations. Their enthusiasm and passion for Tambo Ilusion and everything else they do, is very contagious.

The beautiful jungle surroundings with fireflies and a nocturnal orchestra of birds, monkeys, and crickets gave the entire stay a magical touch. I am very grateful I visited this yoga retreat and I would recommend it to anyone. It has been a highlight of my time in South America!

What a great experience!

My partner and I were at Tambo Ilusion this past October. We had been
looking forward to arrive in the Amazon jungle for some R&R. Armando
had organized an airport pick-up and a friendly mototaxi driver greeted us at the exit of the Tarapoto airport. It was just a 15 minute drive to Tambo Ilusion. Tambo Ilusion is close to the city but once you get there, you are in another world! Here, you are in the jungle!

We were greeted warmly by Johanne and Armando who showed us to our
lovely cabin called a “Tambo” which is made of natural material and is
cozy. There is a good distance between each tambo. Their thatched
roofs are high which gives them a feeling of spaciousness. We took
pleasant “siestas” and got the most restful nights’ sleep. It’s easy
to get lost in the soothing sounds of the wild life and of the melody
of the wind rustling the leaves of the trees. We spent quality time
in the hammocks as well.

There are also lovely constructions made of mud and straw. The reading room is located in one of them, the shared and spacious bathrooms in another. Tambo Ilusion’s environment is rustic and quaint and also offers luxuries such as hot water showers, very comfortable beds and pillows, amazing sunsets, a private fresh water lagoon…

The grounds are beautiful. During our time there, Armando took us on
a walk around his property and showed us his 14 hectare garden! He
explained his permaculture project which is at its first stage, his projects
in his hoop houses, in the pond, with the bees, with the horse, on the
forest trail… Armando is very passionate and knowledgeable about his
surrounding! There is an abundance of fauna and flora on the property thanks to Armando’s care and love for his land.

Combined with Johanne’s care through yoga classes in the gorgeous
“maloca”, Reiki sessions and her healthy and delicious vegetarian
meals, we felt amazing after just a few days! We had lovely candle
lit dinners sharing delicious food and lovely conversations with the
other guests as well.

It was hot and humid while we were there and taking a dip in the
lagoon just hit the spot. Sitting on the deck with our feet dangling
in the water, we observed many varieties of birds fly into their nests
or fly over the water to land on a branch nearby. This gorgeous
lagoon is the heart of the property. The forest and its ecosystem
depend on this water source that Armando has been protecting all these

Our time here was more than relaxing and restful, it was inspiring,
restorative and educative. We learned a lot from Armando’s and
Johanne’s passions. This lovely couple complete each other very well
and generously welcome guests, who are interested in an unforgettable,
alternative vacation experience into their home.

We highly recommend going to Tarapoto to spend quality time at Tambo
Ilusion, a sanctuary located in Peruvian jungle.
