Karen Farrell, Yoga Avenue Principal Teacher and Studio Owner, has been practicing yoga for 13 years, since she fell pregnant with her beautiful son, Oscar. Her much-loved aunt, Veronica Barnsen, who is also a yoga teacher and practitioner of 45 years, introduced Karen to yoga – Karen is particularly proud of this yoga lineage.
Over a decade ago, Karen completed a Diploma of Teacher Training with the much-respected Qi Natural Therapies & Yoga, Sydney. The 1-year Teacher Training covered Yoga Philosophy, Ethics, Anatomy & Physiology, Yogic Physiology, Asana Sequencing, Teaching Methodology and Lifestyle, as well as Integrated Practice and Teaching.
In 2013, Karen travelled to California, LA, to train with Yoga for Surfers founder, Peggy Hall. In addition to teaching a number of different yoga styles, Karen designs and implements yoga courses to specifically assist surfers and board riders (bodyboarders / skate boarders / SUP-ers). The courses are designed to increase core power, flexibility and strength and to improve balance and coordination. Karen is the only Yoga for Surfers Certified Instructor on the Mid-North Coast of NSW.
Currently Karen is undertaking a 1-year Teacher Training Distant Learning Diploma with Zen Ki Yoga. The teacher training explores the 5-element theory, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Macrobiotics and Zen Shiatsu.
Karen has also enjoyed a 20-year career in the media industry, working across TV, film and theatre genres. She intimately understands the corporate world and the pressures of working on daily deadlines. As a yoga teacher, Karen uses her corporate experience to show individuals, businesses and executives how to incorporate a yoga practice to positively impact a sustainable work/life balance, to live less stressfully and to ultimately be more productive in the workplace.
In her 20s, Karen spent three months traveling across Kashmir in the Himalayas and Rajasthan in India, the original birthplace of yoga. Karen will be returning to India in the future to engage in further studies and explore more about the thousands of years old tradition she has adopted as her pathway.
“Yoga is an avenue for self-examination. As we grow in our practice our yoga begins to transcend the yoga room and starts to feed into every aspect of our life. The real yoga takes place when nobody is watching – how we might respond to adversity, or react to a loved one when we are feeling over-stretched. There is no real point in achieving perfectly aligned postures on the mat if we can’t relax into life outside of the yoga room.
“I choose yoga as an avenue to help me be more centered and objective, less judgmental, more accepting of life and its myriad challenges plus to be in tune with feelings and intuition. Yoga provides an avenue – an opportunity - for inspection.”
