Kathy has been a personal trainer for the past 10 years. She’s always been active and weight training was a big part of her life. A monk once told her that she could use weight training as a form of meditation. Even though she had been practicing both weight training and mediation for some time, she never thought she could combine the two together.
Her life was quite stressful so she turned to yoga hoping that it would help her slow down. What she found was that it did so much more. Not only did it help her be more present, it also allowed her to be in touch with her physical body and it became a great pathway to a true form of meditation.
Enthusiastic to share her yoga experience, Joel and her attended their first yoga teacher training with Mind Body Zone. She noticed a parallel between the emotions felt during a yoga practice and the emotions she felt in everyday life. The “craving” of doing a certain pose or the “frustration” of not being able to do one correlate to the emotions and thoughts she experience in her daily life. She learned to acknowledge these emotions without internalizing them.
Joel and she both attended a 10-day Vipassana Retreat by SN Goenka years ago. The techniques she learned deepen her awareness to sensations and thoughts. Sitting for 10 hours a day to meditate is tough but it forces her to face herself, her physical discomfort and her mental chatter.
The human body is amazing and she still yearn to learn more. She recently finished her second Yin Yoga Teacher Training with Paul and Suzie Grilley this year that gave her a better awareness of how different we are spiritually, physically, and emotionally. The long hold of a yoga pose, the surrendering of what there is – the perfect pathway to turning inward, moving into stillness.
