Michael Kohan, or Mukunda Chandra das (affectionately known as Mukunda) is dedicated to helping his clients and students find balance in all aspects of their lives—emotional, spiritual, mental and physical.
Mukunda is a Certified Health and Lifestyle Coach and a 500-hour Registered Yoga Teacher who works with others to help them restore balance in their lives by helping them to make healthier and more conscious lifestyle choices.
True harmony is achieved through developing a balanced cooperation between mind, body and soul. Living in this world can be tough at times, but when we learn simple spiritual tools for healing and maintenance, life can be much easier. Mukunda’s goal is to help clients and students to discover the skills to help them move forward in all areas of their lives.
Mukunda was born and raised in rural New Jersey, before malls and shopping centers dotted the landscape. He attended college at Penn State University and Rutgers University. In 1998, while at Rutgers, he took his first yoga class. While this formed a strong impression, his serious pursuit of the practice did not begin until a few years later. After graduating from college with a in Psychology, he moved to Manhattan, where he immediately began working in the fast-paced industry of real estate finance and marketing. In Fall 2003, after a difficult divorce and the continued strain of working long hours in a competitive environment, it was suggested that he take a yoga class as a means to reduce stress. He was immediately enchanted by the beautiful practice of asana yoga, and thrilled to find how yogic discipline and philosophy can help a person to live a more peaceful life. He quickly realized that what a person learns in in the yoga studio can and should be applied to everyday life. He began striving to embody the qualities of yoga—humility, compassion, service and non-violence. This quest continues to this day. Mukunda feels that his purpose is to serve others through his teaching, by encouraging students to become steadfast in their own practices while integrating them into their day-to-day lives.
Upon meeting yoga teacher Katelin Sisson, who further illuminated the individual and profound nature of yoga practice, Mukunda was inspired to deepen his understanding of yoga’s spiritual foundation. He dedicated himself to learning from teachers of meditation across several traditions and schools, as well as hearing from spiritual leaders on the wisdom of the Bhagavad-Gita, Ramayana, Yoga Sutras, Heart Sutras, and other sacred teachings. After three years of active study, Mukunda met his spiritual mentor (Guru) Radhanatha Swami. After several years of formal study under his Guru, which included systematic reading of spiritual texts, dedicated practice of mantra meditation, rising early for morning services, and regulating his cooking and diet, Mukunda received formal initiation into his spiritual lineage in 2013.
In this same year, Mukunda completed his first 300-hour teacher training under the guidance of Raghunath das and Sondra Loring. Later, he completed a 600-hour alignment-based yoga teacher training lead by Sue Elkind and Naime Jezzeny. Drawing from this training, Mukunda’s well-rounded asana classes incorporate creative Vinyasa sequencing along with meditation, clear communication, and uplifting music. Each class is infused with devotion and aligned with the spiritual teachings of the Bhagavad-Gita and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.
After seventeen years in the corporate world, Mukunda left his job and moved out of New York City with the goal of becoming a full-time yoga teacher. This proved to be a great challenge, and Mukunda found himself starting over at 38 years old, hardly able to make ends meet. During this time, he became a serious student and practitioner of personal development techniques, which changed his life immensely. In 2014, inspired to teach the approaches that had helped him so deeply, Mukunda received training in Holistic Health and Lifestyle Counseling from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (accredited by SUNY and the American Association of Drugless Practitioners), where he studied a variety of practical coaching methods. With this understanding, he can create completely personalized plans based on your goals to move you toward your ideal vision of health within your unique situation, body, lifestyle, preferences, and resources.
