Phil was introduced to Yoga when he suffered a severe case of IT Band Syndrome while training for the 2000 Chicago Marathon. The relief he felt in Pigeon Pose prompted him to try a yoga class, where his preconceived ideas of the practice as a non-muscular activity for women and non-athletes were shattered.
He began practicing in Chicago at Moksha Yoga and The Yoga and Therapy Studio and was impressed at the positive changes yoga had on his other athletic interests: TaeKwonDo, snow and water skiing, board sailing, running and weight training all improved.
As a Certified Personal Trainer(NCSF) he began using yoga to help train his clients and noticing yoga's effectiveness, decided to become a yoga teacher.
First certified by Paul Jerard of AURA Yoga in 2004, he started his teaching career in Chicago at The Yoga and Therapy Studio and in Elkhart at NorthPointe Fitness.
As his interest deepened he sought further training at The Temple of Kriya Yoga in Chicago, certified by them as a Teacher of Hatha Yoga in 2006.
He has taught locally for the past 10 years and currently owns, operates and teaches at The Flower of Life Center, 524 in Elkhart.
His classes are based in traditional Hatha Yoga and focus on helping the student understand proper alignment, how to mindfully connect movement with the breath, the organization of the body and how to move safely in and out of postures.
Offering classes for all abilities, beginning students will be able to confidently and safely take any other yoga class and more advanced students will be challenged as we move into more dynamic practice in vinyasa.
Phil is also a gifted Thai Bodywork Practitioner, trained by Chuck Duff at Thai Bodywork School of Thai Massage in Evanston IL and by Dr. Julie Zuleger at Zenergy School of Massage and Bodywork in Oshkosh WI.
