I started to practice yoga from a book when I was about 12. It turned out that this in a way saved my life. When I was a teenager I became very ill and medications that I had to take disrupted my endocrine system. Yoga offered me a way back into health and has continued to inspire and nurture me throughout my life. My teaching is informed from my deep connection with the healing and nurturing aspects of Yoga.

Whilst I teach in the Iyengar tradition of hatha yoga I open retreats up to students of other traditions as my initial registration was with the International Yoga Teachers Association and later Yoga Australia. When we are students of Yoga we engage the practice to arrive into the power of our own presence. The Iyengar method makes sense within my body/mind/breath complex I think because I was still so unwell when I began to work in the discipline of this method. I was amazed at how it made me feel and how much more energy and mental clarity I had.

I undertook initial formal yoga training with the International Yoga Teachers association and completed my diploma of Yoga Teaching in 2001. I continued to work as a social worker in the Northern Territory and to teach one class a week from home until 2005 when I moved to Orange in NSW to care take a colleagues yoga school whilst she focused on her young family. I attained certification with the BKS Iyengar Yoga Association of Australia in 2005 under Senior Iyengar teacher Alan Goode and I have studied at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Institute in Pune under Geeta and Prashant Iyengar.

Whilst teaching at Yoga Mandir in Canberra I worked as a research assistant to Alan Goode and developed with Alan his current suite of programs including his preliminary teacher training course and his professional development and teacher training apprenticeship programs.

In 2013 I established a yoga school in Hervey Bay Queensland. I feel the beauty and lifestyle of the region support me to surrender further into the depth of yoga. I celebrate each day the opportunity to share the wonderous art and science of yoga with the students who attend the school.

A new way of life

I contacted Polly after surgery and treatment for Ovarian Cancer left me with lymphedema of the legs. I was searching for something that would help me with this persistent fluid build-up. I guess I was looking for something physical but what I found was both the excellent teachings of Iyengar Yoga and an understanding of how the human body works. Also I have gained what I call 'my new way of life'. For the first time, I am able to control stress and live in each moment.

I can honestly say I am a better person for learning Yoga. Polly says Yoga is the teacher but I am so grateful to Polly and Vera for imparting their knowledge with all of us at The Hervey Bay School of Yoga. With love and appreciation I continue my journey. I am a newbie but I am here to stay!

Wonderful

I feel very privileged to have Polly in Hervey Bay. The approach and teaching is in group, but the guidance is very personal. Each student can achieve their best and progress. I really enjoy the spiritual debt of Polly's teachings.

Incredibly Thoughtful Teacher

I recently spent a week-long retreat at Hervey Bay School of Iyengar Yoga. My expectations were high, but nothing prepared me for the experience and teachings of Polly Realf. If I could chose one stand out piece of wisdom of her experience, it would be' Di, talk to your right knee'. I had never noticed prior to this sugestion that i had a 'lazy knee' .
So now i talk to it every day in my practice and also thanks to Polly, I can headstand. Her philosophy talks were informative and straight from the heart.
Thank you Polly

Unexpected insight.

I have just completed a three day intensive course with Polly. I have my own daily practice and I did expect corrections in my poses. But what I didn't expect was a whole new level of personal understanding both in my body and my mind. As Polly spoke I resonated with her expectation of pushing myself beyond what I thought I could do. Questioning why my body has to be limited. And by doing this I have opened up pathways and realisations that I have not been able to achieve on my own. I would recommend the school of yoga to anyone who feels they need more in life.

A great teacher and mentor

Polly is a pragmatic, thoughtful and confident teacher. She has provided a structured and balanced program of teaching over many years. My personal experience of having health issues was that she was able adapt her teaching to enable me to take part in all aspects of class work safely and confidently. I recommend her without hesitation to you.

A pleasure

When I met Polly I was practising yoga by my own for many years, suddenly I realised how much important is the experience from an exceptional teacher correcting you making you feel reknowing about your own experience. Just great!! I hope to be there to continuing with the classes, I miss them like water!!
