Rachel has been practicing yoga for 30 years and has taught for over 20. She discovered yoga at the age of 19 after being told by a chiropractor that yoga and meditation would help her back problems. She began her studies in Sydney, Australia but later moved to Byron Bay where her training continued in the Iyengar and Astanga methods. One of her first teaching engagements was as the Head of Dance at the Northern Rivers Conservatorium in Lismore, NSW.
While living in New York from 2000–2004 Rachel met and mentored with ISHTA yoga founder Alan Finger which led to teaching in his studios for four years. There she co-created and coordinated their Teacher Training Program, becoming a senior facilitator and mentor. Since her return to Australia in 2005, she has gone on to create and facilitate her own teacher trainings and workshops in Australia, India, Bali, Japan, New York and in many major cities in Europe.
Being passionate about Yoga and its many forms she practices Bhakti and studies Gyan Yoga (Self Knowledge) and incorporates the traditional teachings of the Upanishads, Yantra, Mantra and Mudra into her workshops and trainings.
Her classes are often described as a fluid mix of creative playful sequencing, meaningful insights and lighthearted fun
Rachel is also a musician: she co-created and produced a popular Australian Yoga Video series and a Kid's Yoga Video. She is an award-winning musician for her devotional chanting CD Sita Ram and with her band the Subway Bhaktis has gone on to create two more devotional chanting CD’s. Recently her poetry was published in the “ Poetry of Yoga” anthology.

Absolutely, hands down, the best yoga training in Australia

Rachel Zinman offers a unique experience which not only covers the technical aspects of yoga thoroughly, but also addresses the heart of bhakti and self knowledge. The training is comprehensive and challenging, yet nurturing and profoundly supportive and has the potential to be life-changing for those who are ready!

A complete and wonderfully unique yoga training experience

I am so incredibly grateful to have found Rachel's teacher training course. It was everything I could have hoped for and more, providing such an amazing foundation to commence my yoga teaching career.

In depth teaching regarding the postures and how to teach, a strong focus on safe alignment and use of props - making yoga suitable and accessible for all students who may enter our classes, study of Ayurveda, chakras, pranayama, meditation, anatomy, self knowledge, pre-natal yoga, children's yoga, sequencing, adjusting, an introduction to the beautiful heart-warming practice of bhakti including yantra and kirtan, and a very experienced and knowledgeable group of teaching staff (who have continued to be amazing and supportive mentors for me) are all elements which make this training both complete and unique. My personal practice was taken to an unanticipated level during the 6 weeks intensive training. Being immersed in the true essence of yoga for 6 weeks was an experience that I didn't want to end. Being surrounded by like minded and supportive teachers and fellow trainees in the incredible space that Rachel and John create and hold was life changing, and taught me how to experience the bliss, stillness and happiness of yoga in every minute of every day.

Complex teachings explained simply with lightness

As a long time practitioner of yoga, I've sampled many teachers over the decades, and I would recommend Rachel Zinman and her teacher training, most highly. She is thorough, passionate and committed. Her own practice is beautiful, and a great inspiration to me. The Teacher Training and Advanced Teacher Training and other workshops are brilliantly structured to strike a good balance between the spiritual, the theoretical, and the practical.

I have gained much strength, grace and wisdom from all of the workshops I've participated in, and can recommend these trainings to anyone who wishes to sincerely deepen their practice and their understanding of this tradition of yoga. The ISHTA system works particularly well for students of all levels; there are many modifications so that a pose (asana) can be experienced at its classic height, or at a number of stages along the way. In this way, the student yogi/yogini is always safe from injury.

Suitable for new to yoga, or with genuinely flexible minded.

It was not what I wanted, but I gained a lot of knowledge and inspirations from the dedicated great team of passionate teachers. The self knowledge lectures, I will treasure them forever, I am deeply grateful to Rachel and John to put this course together for us. After the good struggle with my ego, I have come to the realization of that I don't need to be anyone else(like a yoga teacher for example!), I am totally at peace and full of love and gratitude for the people who involved in this course. This course would be suitable for people who can bring a beginners' mind with them.

Mature Student

Life changing experience for me, the Ishta Yoga Teacher Training was thorough both on and off the mat. Six weeks of intensive gave me the tools and confidence to come out as a Teacher and I began teaching straight away. As a mature woman with little yoga experience - Rachel and her amazing team enlightened in me a passion for Yoga...real Yoga.

Rachel Zinman Teacher Training

Several years ago I finally decided to become certified as a yoga teacher. After 29 years of personal yoga practice I needed a teacher really 'living' yoga for my Teacher Training. Rachel's depth of devotion to yoga as a spiritual, physical, and sacred practice toward self knowledge, inner peace and vitality is contagious!
Students receive much more than an anatomical explanation or a philosophical understanding. Rachel offers her keen insight and depth of wisdom to guide and encourage each student individually. Her grace and humour colour all her work. This training is done with pure heart and pristine integrity. -Moana Pearl

Rachel is a caring, inspiring and dynamic teacher

My teacher training with Rachel in 2005 changed my life... for the better! my original intent was just to go deeper into the roots and foundations for a practice I had been with for 6 or 7 years but had really only been skimming the surface. i learned so much about my own body and how to practice in a way that was supportive for me and how to help students find their unique way of working in poses to support their structure and constitution.

the one month course helped build a new foundation for my practice, and lay the path for my teaching, which i have continued with. rachel is a caring and supportive yoga teacher, whose enthusiasm and love for what she does comes through her teaching. over the years that i have known rachel, i have seen her continue to blossom and grow in her embodiment of yoga and self knowledge, and it has been a pleasure and honor to study and teach with her. rachel's unique teaching style which blends both dynamic flowing asana with meditation and bhakti yoga is a gift to her students.
