Fifteen years ago, due to the suggestion of one of my teachers, I decided to share my experience and began teaching. Since that first day in class, I have never looked back only forward, with a passion and joy that I find in every opportunity I have to work with students, believing there is a form of yoga suitable for everyone, regardless of age or physical limitations.

My knowledge and quality as a Yoga teacher / therapist is based on a solid educational back ground: Certified and Registered in Hatha Yoga, by Yoga Alliance, USA and the European Yoga Union, having completed 400+ hours at Yoga Vidya/ Sivananda in Germany, and E-RYT-500 USA. I'm also certified as a yoga therapist by the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT).

More details: I finished four years of Yoga Therapy studies at Loyola Marymount University and an Internship Program at the Venice Family Clinic’s Simm/Mann Health and Wellness Center with Dr. Lori Rubenstein Fazzio and Dr. Myles Spar.
I also have gained additional teachers certification and /or joined workshops with the following teachers:
Judith Lasater (Anatomy, Relax & Renew Teacher Certified), Dr. Larry Payne (Prime of Life Teacher Certified), Liz Franklin (Chair Yoga Teacher Certified),  Dr. Amy Wheeler (Case Studies), Surendra Mehta (Pranayama - Breathing), Gary Kraftsow, Desiree Rumbaugh,  Richard Rosen, Cindy Lee,  Frank Jude Boccio,  Tias Little & Jason Crandall.

I offer classes for all ages, but I focus especially on an often neglected age group: boomers / seniors. In the meantime I've established more than a dozen classes, which are adapted to the special needs, wishes and requests of this target group. Generally I give priority to the art of breathing, movement in synergy, with a focus on a solid foundation of asana and alignment while also developing flexibility, building strength and increasing balance. Always offering students optional variations/adaptations of asanas to suit their individual bodies, asking students to challenge themselves but never asking them to leave their comfort zone, as pain is not gain. Emphasizing function over form but always considering when form is necessary for the integrity of the body. I enjoy teaching my students how to be able to heal themselves, helping them to clarify their values and living their lives with integrity, conviction and consistency. Practice and life are not that different.

My Therapeutic Gentle Yoga are for all ages plus “Yoga as a Solution” for Boomers/Seniors, which takes you from doing yoga … in the Chair to … with the Chair to … on the Mat, with an emphasis on prevention and independence, seeing the ability to do tomorrow something which you can’t do today, teaching life skills for living.

My teaching philosophy is based on a contemporary interpretation of ancient sources without fashionable trends, while establishing a coherent discipline with therapeutic benefit. Yoga therapy can be considered replacement therapy, giving up something in your life which may not be working and replacing it with something which will bring you closer to your goal of living a healthier balanced life.

Just right yoga

RoxAnn's classes always have something new and build on anyone's past yoga practice. Beginners should never be afraid to take her class. Experienced yoga practitioners will be refreshed. The music selections are wonderful.

A Great Teacher

I have used books, videos and websites, and have attended classes over the years in an attempt to make yoga work for me. Somehow it never did until I began attending RoxAnn's classes a year ago. Thanks to her understanding of how yoga contributes to health and longevity, and her ability to help her students connect these ideas with the work we were doing in class, I now have a practice. I do yoga nearly every day. I know what works for me and my body, and I feel the results in every aspect of my life.

Yoga with RoxAnn Enriched My Life

I have been attending RoxAnn's yoga classes for a few years now. I started with one class a week and eventually went to three classes a week because I found that I not only looked forward to her classes but I felt better after class and left with a more positive attitude. She inspires me to take better care of myself not only through yoga but through the food I eat and my outlook on life in general. Her personal attention to each individual in class is amazing and never encourages you to attempt a pose that you are not ready for. Her breathing techniques have been a life saver to me many times during a stressful day. Thank you RoxAnn for all you have taught me and will continue to teach me!

5 Stars for RoxAnn

Add my name to those singing praises for RoxAnn's unique and personalized approach to teaching yoga. I have attended her classes for about 6 years, starting when I noticed how hard it was to get up off the floor when playing with my grandkids. RoxAnn is keeping her Seniors agile and moving, always honing her skills and experience with ongoing education. We (her students) are all richer for it, and I am ever so grateful. She has become an integral part of my life; her classes are now mandatory for my well-being.

Outstanding yoga teacher!!!!!!!!

Yoga with RoxAnn is a 6 hours that I so look forward during my week! What a wonderful experience to be in 2 of her classes. I would take yoga with her 5 days a week if I could afford. My mind is exhilarated and my body speaks volumes during and after my class with her and wants to stay in working out. The best yoga instructor that I have ever met. Thank you, RoxAnn

My testimonial

Hello everyone. My name is Bob M., from Southern California. I am in my early 70’s and up until last April (2014) I had never done Yoga in my lifetime.
For the past 25 years I have been under the care of a chiropractor for low back pain, sciatica and other complications resulting from my congenital spinabifita. For the past 7-8 years I have been seeing a massage therapist every 3 weeks to help ease the discomfort in my back.

About a year ago my massage therapist told me that the left side of my back was higher than the right side. I addition, I was told that my neck muscles were too tight. My therapist suggested that I try yoga to help improve my body alignment. I was told that yoga would possibly help me avoid surgery on my back within the next 5 years.
In April, 2014 I signed up for a “Yoga in a Chair” class at the Senior Center. There I met my teacher; Ms. RoxAnn Madera. The “Yoga in a Chair” class was not what I was hoping for, and after 2 classes, RoxAnn suggested that I try her “Yoga on a Mat” class.
The class worked out for me so well, that I now do “Yoga on a Mat” twice weekly. RoxAnn’s class is neither judgmental nor competitive, and everyone is encouraged to “work at your own pace”, and “do what you can”. There are very few other men in her classes, but, I’m truly not even aware of the other classmates.
After almost 1 year of yoga, my low back pain has all but disappeared, and my sciatica pain is now non-existent. My chiropractor now does “very little” adjusting and he believes that the yoga has really helped me. Best of all, my massage therapist told me a few months ago that my back was now “even’ on both sides, my low back was strong and my neck was much looser.
Count me in as a “Lifetime Yogie”
Bob M.

RoxAnn's Yoga Class very inspiring!

I am glad to write a testimonial for RoxAnn to share what a positive impact she has had on my life. I have been struggling with a several mind and body issues lately and she has really helped me to maintain balance in my life. I really love her yoga class and her presence - both comforting and encouraging - without being pushy. I have noticed that I am able to do certain poses that I was not able to do a year ago.

I think it's been about three years that I've been taking her Gentle Yoga class and I feel so much more confident than when I started. Although it didn't take that long to get through the "am I doing it right" phase and looking around to see how everyone else was doing it. I now enjoy the flow of moving from one stretch or pose to the next without my inner voice chiming in. Her class is very inspiring and I look forward to taking my practice to the next level. Thank you RoxAnn!

RoxAnn is a Great Teacher

I have been a student of RoxAnn's senior yoga classes for the past 3 years.. She is so knowledgeable in the body and how it works. I would recommend these classes for all seniors. I feel my flexibility has improved. I have a lot of physical debilities and I feel safe in doing the poses in her class. She is an excellent role model for the senior community and how you can be active at any level and stage of life.
I love the last 5 minutes of her classes where Roxann reads to us inspirational quotes.

My Yoga class has become such an important part of my life. Since I began, I am so much more flexible along with a great improvement in my balance which has helped me to feel more self confidence. I have suffered with anxiety in the past which left me feeling out of control emotionally. Since I have been practicing deep breathing, I have felt such a difference in my day to day life and I am able to control all the negative thoughts.

best yoga instructor I've found

Although I met RoxAnn at another studio years ago, and personally at a yoga book club, she impressed me from the moment I observed her.
It was my pleasure to find her classes and begin my practice with a consistency other studios did not provide.
Structurally I had major challenges which she addressed and monitored. I continue those stretches daily having learned the correct way to do them from Roxann, and my health has improved because of it

Her balance classes are so well designed for the seniors that I am going to bring my parents in their 80's to experience RoxAnn's classes. Dad had recent open heart surgery, and she is fantastic at starting slow and gently, building strength and balance.
I look forward to joining one of her European retreats in the next year or two, as Roxann is also a kind, caring and INTERESTING person.

RoxAnn Rocks!

I have been under RoxAnn's tutelage for five years now. I am an avid cyclist and surfer but have always been pretty inflexible throughout my life but through her yoga instruction (and inspiration) this is changing for the better: I can actually bend over and touch my toes--palms flat on the floor's next! I heartily would recommend RoxAnn as an instructor to anyone considering exploring what yoga has to offer, especially those with physical limitations.

Improvig my life

Since starting yoga with RoxAnn two years ago, I have much more flexibility, balance and poise.

She is very patient and empathetic with students, pushing us but never more than we can handle.

I strongly recommend her to others.

Yoga as a solution

I have been taking RoxAnn's Solution class for about 2 years. Since I have some physical
limitations, I was apprehensive about joining a yoga class. This fear was quickly dispelled. Roxann is a very good and knowledgeable teacher, who really cares about her students. I enjoy her class very much, great for body and mind.

How yoga has improved my lifestyle...

I was a walker, dancer, bicycle rider, snow and water skier, and discovered in 2000 that I had lost 2.5 inches in height due to bone loss. I was also told in 2006 that I had scoliosis and by then I had gone from my original height 5'6.5" to my current height of 5'2" and could no longer walk or dance by 2009.

After my husband died in 2004 I traveled to China, Panama Canal, Thailand, Brazil, Argentina, Boston, and Hawaii during the years of 2005 through 2009 with friends.

During my travels I started having difficulty walking and was told it was arthritis and learn to just live with it! Later on with blood tests they also said it was rheumatoid arthritis.

When the left foot would no longer bend I went to a podiatrist; he operated in 2009 and found 4 to 5 fractured bones that were fused together and one torn ligament. After months of therapy I decided on April 4, 2011 to try "Yoga with a Chair" with RoxAnn Madera for the many reasons stated above and below.

As I could no longer walk for exercise, because my left foot was very weak plus painful, I was not stable on my feet, poor balance, difficulty doing steps, plus my back compresses when on my feet for any length of time, and then I fell in my home and had to crawl to pull myself up with a chair...I decided something needed to change - Life Alert was not the only answer.

After starting yoga one day a week back in April, RoxAnn recommended that I try yoga on a mat so I added another class "Yoga on a Mat" on June 30, 2011, and September 14, 2011 RoxAnn encouraged me to attend her class "Yoga as a Solution".

I presently have three classes with RoxAnn - Yoga with a Chair on Monday (60 minutes) and Yoga as a Solution On Wednesday and Thursday (90 minutes) each.

With RoxAnn's classes I now have better balance, can now climb steps normally and feel better each day. Along with the yoga three times per week I also do massage therapy twice a month, acupuncture once per month and I do not use pain medication.

I also feel that with RoxAnn's classes it has helped with my scoliosis and hopefully with the stretching it will help deter the rapid curvature of my spine and loss of height. I am so grateful for looking into yoga and especially grateful it was RoxAnn.

I am 78 yrs old, still working part-time as full charge bookkeeper and so very grateful each day for the improvement in my overall health and feel yoga is a very important part of my program for maintaining my balance and ability to remain mobile and hopefully eventually start traveling again.

Thank you so much RoxAnn.....

Yoga with RoxAnn

I have been a student in RoxAnn's class for a full year now. Her class helps me de-stress after a busy work day. During our first session she taught us lots of yoga poses, how to move between them, and how to start a home practice. And she made it simple. A home practice is something I have not done in many years. I truly thank her for helping me remember enough and become flexible enough to do that again. My core strength and stamina have also improved. RoxAnn is always learning and passing along what she learns for the benefit of her students. She demonstrates with lots of modifications for those who need them, and she spots all of us, continually helping us improve. She nurtures the whole person - mind, body and soul.

The complete instructor

If you are looking for a yoga class that is not in any way intimidating, has a teacher who individualizes to each students needs, is passionate about yoga and exudes that in every class she teaches, then RoxAnn's classes are for you. Starting out, we are always leery that the teacher is going to go too fast and use yoga jargon that we wont be able to follow, but nothing is further from the truth with RoxAnn.

Whether it is the first or 100th class, she verbally explains every pose or flow, and exactly how to get there. You don't even have to watch her because her explanations are so clear. RoxAnn is a great teacher, regardless of your level of yoga but if you are starting out, you would be hard pressed to find a better instructor to help you become another lover of yoga.

RoxAnn Madera

After being introduced to yoga with Roxanne I'm wanting more. As. New student she was very welcoming and made me feel part of the group immediately. She was able to accommodate my issues with arthritis and vertigo by making adjustments to the different moves, always offering encouragement. I am getting stronger and achieving better balance each week. In RoxAnn's class I feel cared for and safe! D. Nelson

A yoga master!

Roxann is one of the most unusual yoga instructors that I've encountered because she teaches her classes with her student's abilities and health in mind. She understands that her older students cannot be forced into pretzel poses. She is well organized and she teaches us one movement that builds on the previous one. Nothing that she does is happenstance; everything flows together. By the end of the class I feel invigorated and energetic and able to move all those joints that didn't move before. She is, indeed, an exceptional yoga teacher and I highly recommended her.

Beginning Yoga

RoxAnn got me started on my yoga path four years ago for which I am extremely grateful. Her classes are unintimidating, accessible, and inviting, all important to a beginner. I found ample room to grow in her class as she knows how to expand and contract the range of her class difficulty level through appropriate adaptations for the class population.

RoxAnn's Classes Keep Me Coming Back!

My daughter turned me on to RoxAnn's yoga classes over 3 years ago and I am so glad that she did. After I retired I needed to concentrate more on keeping healthly in my senior years. Because RoxAnn considers the limitations of her students, she has the ability to make us feel that we can succeed and help ourselves doing yoga. I started out not knowing any of the yoga 'poses' and now I can do more that I ever thought possible. I feel a real sense of accomplishment in the classes and feel better about being able to keep doing yoga for the rest of my life!

Patient and Very Knowledgeable

Roxann is the reason I started Yoga 10 years ago. After many years of tennis and other sports, the injuries were started to pile up. Roxann not only shows how to do the stretches, she is very encouraging. She also is one of the few teachers that walks around the class and makes sure the students are doing the exercises properly. She is an excellent teacher! I am so glad I do Yoga
