Tory is my second Yoga teacher - the one who convinced me that I love yoga, the one who helped me stick with it long enough to see and appreciate the amazing changes it has made in my body and my mind. Good bye daily aches and pains, it was not about getting older, it was about lacking flexibility and strength.
Tory's classes are always challenging, but not discouraging. She does an amazing job of setting and keeping to a theme. There is no obvious script but each class is different and the flow appears effortless, something that I'm sure comes from extensive and careful preparation. She demonstrates and then talks us through the pose, but her instructions are never distracting. I can hear her voice in my head as I do my daily practice. She encourages and adjusts occasionally, but seems to have an innate sense of when to adjust and when not to.
Her classes are welcoming and warm, there is a sense of gentle humor and acceptance. Whatever the student's level, I think we all leave feeling better for having participated.
This is my second year taking Vinyasa classes with Tory and she is an excellent teacher. Other Vinyasa classes that I take are pretty predictable and prescribed, but Tory's classes, while still in the Vinyasa style, are very thought out in advance and different every time. She is very knowledgeable about doing yoga safely and effectively and while still offering a challenge every week.
I have been practicing Vinyasa with Tory since the fall of 2013. Each week, the practice focuses on a specific group of muscles or key alignment element. Tory uses clear directions, props and adjustment to help the class work through the sequence and hone our practice. She has a strong understanding of anatomy and even the minor adjustments and directions she provides have great impact.
These cues from class stay with me during my home practice and I find this has enabled me to continue making progress between classes.
Tory has a kind and welcoming personality and builds a community through her classes and involvement with special events at the studio. She regularly donates her time by providing yoga events by donation benefiting local civic groups.
I started taking classes with Tory shortly after she completed Teacher Training and not that long after I had my daughter. I was easing back into a regular practice and Tory was easing into teaching. It turne out to be a wonderful match! I have been an active practitioner for close to 15 years and in our very first class together Tory suggested just the slightest adjustment in my hands and forearms in Downward Dog, that totally changed my practice.
It's little things like this that she brings to her practice each time she steps on the mat to teach. I am floored by how much knowledge she has been able to accumulate and then effectively share with others in a relatively short period of time. I only wish I could adjust my schedule better to fits more of her classes in it.
