Yogacharini Kalavathi Devi is a professionally trained Senior Yoga Teacher from Swami Gitandanda’s ashram, ICYER, in Pondicherry, South India. In 1999, Kalavathi took the 6 months intensive residential teacher training course and has lived and taught in South Wales since.

Kalavathi is the owner of Om Studio, a purpose built yoga studio in Roath in Cardiff. Here she teaches a variety of classes: General yoga classes, pregnancy yoga, kids yoga, baby yoga, corporate yoga, one to one private sessions, yoga therapy, mantra, philosophy and more. Kalavathi teaches a yearly Yoga foundation course and has a 200Hr Yoga Teacher Training programme, both are run in conjunction with Swami Gitananda’s ashram in India. Much of the work Kalavathi does is community based where she works with people with breathing and health problems and teaches them how to breathe to improve their health and well-being.

Kalavathi has run numerous Yoga retreats and holidays both in the UK and Internationally and she has taught and given demonstrations at the 2005 and 2006 &2008 ‘Yoga Show’ at Olympia in London. During her trip in 2010 Kalavathi was awarded the prestigious title ‘Yoga Chemmal’ for her service to Yoga.

One of the best teachers you will find in the UK

Kalavathi is an extraordinarily instinctive and intuitive teacher. Her lessons are gentle yet empowering and, taking a little at a time, she makes you feel that absolutely anything is possible. Many teachers, especially in the west, choose to ignore the important spiritual heritage that is a key part of yoga; however, her integrated approach means that mind, body and spirit are all nourished and brought into balance. I would highly recommend Kalavathi and would also add that if you have the chance to study with her at her mother school, the ICYER Ananda Ashram in Pondicherry, then you should not hesitate to make the journey.

"A Tirelessly Committed Ambassador for Gitananda Yoga"

Kalavathi gets things done. She devotes her full attention to progressing herself and her students onwards and upwards through the undiluted Yoga of Swami Gitananda.
Kalavathi bravely embodies the uncompromising and challenging essence which is the basis of her tradition. it is a breath of fresh air to be able to access through her teaching, here in the UK, a form of Yoga that provides all aspects of yoga to the full. Furthermore, her classes allow students to absorb gently over time the fullness of the Indian culture from which yoga has come.

Sensitive approach and succinct explanations

Been under Kalavathi's tuition of this wonderful art and have reaped the benefits in many ways. Most obvious benefit is total diminished lower back pain which used to bother me in mornings. General increased mindfulness also. Other aspects gained from yoga personally are subtle so far during the last 2-3 years of starting but I'm sure, as with most things in more life, the more one puts in the more one "gets out of it".

Relaxed atmosphere and a sense of community too which is reassuring - Kalavathi has developed a loyal community of students and good-natured wit regularly eminates from one corner of the studio to another corner and back all round. A good giggle is a great bonus, of course. Somehow Kalavathi manages to be accessible to any level. I find this one of the most alluring dimensions of her class. I have felt great benefit from day one (incidentally without feeling "less than" in anyway) and still feel great benefit but a warm, subtle and unpressurised sense of what I could become with continued attendance. Burgen chanting is a brilliant experience I've only tried once so far but came away "on cloud 9" and a definite spring in my step. I feel blessed also to have experienced a retreat organised by Kalavathi which was a wonderful experience and one I hope to repeat in future. I came away refreshed, cheered, inspired and nourished very well by the plethora of different raw food menus and fragrant low-caffeine teas. I was grateful also for the outdoors walk led by Kalavathi - the soul nourished by the sight of so much greenery. As a city dweller that was a wonderful opportunity in itself. At first the social and foody side of the class I was unsure of, but believe me I delight in attending local restaurants after a great class. The 2 hour class length is wonderful and the 50/50 split between postural activity and stillness is a wonderful composition. The relaxation is no mere afterthought and this holistic devising must be a big part of the effectiveness of Kalavathi's classes.

Wonderful warm welcoming but challenging too.

Great classes on every level. Deep spiritual practice plus Kalavathi has huge knowledge and understanding of theory and practice.

Good balance of being focussed but lighthearted. Friendly and fun with lots of laughter too.
